the paradox of automation
Good article and has been obvious for many years as we hurtle towards AI systems.
To do a good job at controlling anything in our society you have to fully understand how it works.
That statement reminds me of an incident when I used to work in an lingerie factory as a circular knitting machine operator.
I was shop steward and managed to get the workers I represented a 60% plus payrise by allowing the implementation of a scheme that the management of the factory desired because they thought it would hold our annual payrise down to around 4%.
Against the wishes of my members I agreed on their behalf to trial the scheme for 6 weeks, after the trial (after I illuminated my members of the benefits) I also agreed to its permanent implementation much to the pleasure of the management.
The management where only pleased for a short time as productivity went up 40% and our wages went up 60%. This all happened because I understood fully how that part of the factory worked and its shortcomings and the management didn't.
