Anything from Professional Gambler to Software Developer depending upon the audience and my enthusiasm for a lengthy explanation.

Thanks Jimibt, that certainly has more of a ring of truth about it than my option.

When I was trading and people asked I explained and inevitably they then felt the right to ask how much do you make doing that...my response was well how much do you make and I will tell you if it is higher or lower. That usually put an end to that part of the conversation.

I never did understand why people feel fine to ask you how much you make trading but would never think to ask such a question if you said any other profession.

I eventually went down the line of what Peter did, kind of, I just made up whatever job came into my head as I realised what does it actually matter, you aren't asking because you have a genuine interest, you just want to know how I compare to you and if you are socially ranked higher or lower than me.

I couldn't care less and those that matter don't care and those that care don't matter.

There are plenty of threads along this same line over the years of the forum - with pretty much the same replies as have been posted so far on this thread.

What I would find interesting is what some of the old full timers said they had been doing when they returned to the work place and what response that got.

I found the folks at the place I used to work pretty accepting about what I had been doing. That was an investment bank though, so I guess they sort of understood the similarities. No one asked huge amounts of questions about it to be honest. Sometimes I wonder if they thought I was just making it all up and was actually just living life as a bum on some kind of inheritance or something!
