Those of us that trade football will be familiar with the many suspensions that happen during the course of a game - that heartpounding moment if you need a goal - or don't need one when Peter's voice suddenly announces "This event has been suspended" - and the tense moment that follows waiting discover why - or maybe just as your outbet was being counted in and now won't get you out or possibly will give you the opportunity for more green than you planned.

I enjoy the correct score market - often while waiting to discover the reason for a suspension my eyes are ineviteably fixed on the ladder to see the tell tale removal of all back bets from scorelines no longer possible - leaving only the 'kept' laybets below the most recently traded price on that scoreline.

Occassionally I feel that I notice a littly bit of activity - a few bets disappear before the recommencement of in play. Maybe I just imagine it or maybe its due to some lag between my computer and the rest of the world.

But then there was the China v Iceland game yesterday.

The game was listed as a game in which in play was to happen. It did go in play and everything was as normal - until 9 minutes into the game when the suspension happened. All 'kept' bets as usual remained kept. But the game didn't get unsuspended until late in the second half. A check on the customer service site and it was already being reported by customers who were told that they'd unfortunately lost the feed. Well its unfortunate but these things happen.
However what surprised me is that the kept lay bets on 0-0 were slowly being chomped through as the game went on goaless - until the goal was scored!

Who was taking these bets in this 'suspended market'?

Unfortunately I was in training mode at the time so have no evidence - but it didn't stop me noticing that suspended markets on the exchange don't seem to be suspended for everyone.

Were they being matched or just cancelled? Likely to be a bot which try's to get value and then cancels as the match goes on.

How can you still cancel bets when the market is suspended? I mean, aren't all unmatched bets automatically canceled by betfair at the moment the market gets suspended?

Bets are only supposed to be cancelled when a material event has occurred like a goal, penalty or red card, remember many goals are disallowed but the market will be suspended. Plus you have 'keep' bets that are set to remain regardless. Plenty of games will be suspending every few minutes depending how jittery the suspend guy is or even how reliable the feed is. My football bots have always been set to cancel unmatched bets upon suspension as I have little faith in Betfair's guy with his finger on the button especially for smaller foreign matches.
