This might sound silly. When I manually place a back bet on betfair at current odds (no ticks above or below)then ask for lower price lay bet eg back at 3/1 place lay maybe 2.5/1 I can keep (this by clicking keep)the lay bet pre inplay and in running after back bet is struck.
How is this achievable in automation.
Are there rules conditions I have to apply?

Yes it can be done simply by creating a new rule using the Rule Type 'Keep unmatched bets'

Are you sure you had unmatched trades to change the status of?
Are you sure it's timed to be triggered before the market goes in-play?
Are you able to reproduce the error manually or is it just in automation?
Your message basically has no info other than "it doesn't work", so it's quite difficult to help.
Do you have any more info ? Can show all of the log info? The .baf file?

I used Bet Angel for the first time today. I have the same initial question, I want an unmatched bet to be kept when the race goes in-play, as I want this to happen for every race, is there a global setting I can change?
I am hoping the automation is going to help.

If you search the user guide for 'keep unmatched' you'll find all the different places and ways this topic is handled, and you'll see there's no global setting.
There are far too many ways to create trades (ladder, 1-click, dutching, bookmaking, automation, excel etc) all potentially with different strategies, and so many close trade strategies, that having one overriding 'keep all ' setting would frankly be a disaster waiting to happen. Sometimes 50% of the forum chat is about how to STOP positions going inplay
