Broadband speeds for trading.

I did a test and the results are as follows:

Download speed: 50.90Mbps

Upload speed 25.30 Mps

Latency: 31.0s (I do not know what latency is btw)

Being a newbie trader and going by what I see when I trade compared to visual comparisons on Peter's videos, I'm sure this is fast enough. However, I'm looking to move into a more rural area and wonder what the minimum speeds would one need to trade.

Thanks for any help.

PS If there is already a topic on this then apologies- please link this luddite up!

I only use Guardian, but looking at that right now (updating 37 races at 20ms), the network traffic is less than 0.021 Mb/s. Even if you assumed that the traffic was 100 x that during the race times, that's still only around 2.1 Mb/s - so really, really tiny amounts of data.

The latency is basically about how quickly information gets from your PC to a remote server. With something like BetAngel, it's Latency and something called packet loss that can affect the responsiveness (how quickly things react to actions). Your download speed is more than enough to cope.

I'm assuming that you got the latency figure from something like SpeedTest.Net? In which case, that's not the complete story because you are concerned with the latency between you and BetFair and that's more difficult to judge. Both download speeds and latency can vary a lot from second to second and will be affected by time of day, who your ISP is and how many other people are in your house downloading Game Of Thrones in HD from Netflix :-)

If your PCs responsiveness is a lot slower than the videos you've seen, then the most likely cause is that it's your PC that is the bottleneck. There must be quite a few posts on this forum about optimising your PC whilst you trading (close any unwanted programs such as download managers, Spotify streaming etc. etc.) you should have a look at those.

Forgot to say - I think quite a few people on here use a VPS (virtual private server). Those servers are hosted with companies that generally have better Internet connections than are available for homes (specifically, they have lower latency). If you move to a rural area and find that the internet connection is really bad then a VPS may be a solution. You'll still have some problems if you're trading in real-time, but any automation that you had with BA should work without problems.

Thank you very much for the detailed response, EPS. Very good of you to take the time.

Automation for me is still some way off as I'm manually pre-race trading. My ideal would be to live in the middle of nowhere with a superfast connection- going to have to compromise I think!

A reliable connection is more important than brute speed, BA is ridiculously light on the bandwidth it uses. Dont' worry about being in a remote location, PW has even traded on a transatlantic flight !

Just remember its 'Ping not Bling' that matters and as other have said weather you have 5mb or 200mb broadband it wont make any difference
Check your ping using a site like this

I use a copper ADSL connetcion , get about 2.4mps and to be honest the one problem I don't have is speed. Now making money, that's a different matter. I would suggest unless you are doing somthing really extreme in terms of number of markets, refresh rates etc or you really do live in a very poor internet area then internet speed isn't likly to be your issue.

Thanks again all.

Dallas I tried the ping test and it returned 22ms. As I said though, I'm not worried about where I live it's if I move to the country (oooarrrr!)

So one would need a larger figure if one was say, streaming films but that wouldn't necessarily impact on using BA?

Am I right in thinking that the recent introduction of the streaming of prices from Betfair, as opposed to software providers like BA having to make endless calls to Betfair for prices etc., would/should significantly reduce the load on our connections?

Yes it should now reduce the data used

You need to now try to find out what sort of ping rates are possible from the location your thinking of moving to with the internet avaliable there or that your likely to use.

if your on 100mb now with a ping of 22ms and the new loaction on only has 3mb but with a ping of 24ms then you wont see any effect on BA, you will however find streaming movies more difficult and downloading much slower than your used to

Thanks Dallas, I'd felt that might be the case.
