using the live /safe mode

Can anyone tell me how to switch between live /safe mode without having to log out then log back in

You can't - the software is designed that way on purpose to remove any possibility of anyone accidentally switching between 'live' and 'practice'

... but you can have two sessions open - one live mode and one practice mode if you wish.
