He survived 50 years longer than predicted at the time and has continued to add to our understanding of the universe, time and quite frankly, self deprecating humour..
will miss him hugely for his warmth...

Stephen Hawking RIP
i think you've captured why i felt this news much harder than i imagined - this truly proves that mortality exists...
as he once said: "Look up at the stars and not down at your feet" - Professor Stephen Hawking

I never realised how old he was, for some reason thought he was much younger.
Amazing piece of triumph against adversity.

Thats very funny.
What I respect the most about Stephen Hawkin is the fact he refused a knighthood in the 90s.

It's a shock because 'without being funny' I didn't realise he was so ill.... Or that close to the end anyway.
Sad news about Ken Dodd too, saw him in several end of the pier shows in the 70s on seaside family hols. Saw them all, Les Dawson, Monkhouse etc etc.

Relatively, he had a brief time in history.
I lived in Cambridge for a few years. I spent a lot of time at the various colleges. Professor Hawking could often be seen there and in town.
The first time I saw him, I was buying some strawberries from an outdoor market stall in the city centre. I paid for the strawberries, turned around, and almost fell over him and his wheelchair. He was with his wife. I hadn't seen him nor did I expect to see him. He bought some bananas.
The last time I saw him was just over two years ago. It was a Saturday afternoon. I was in Marks and Spencer buying valentines gifts for my partner, which was the following day. He was doing the same. He had a bunch of 12 dark red roses and a box of Milk Tray in his lap. I had the same in my arms. We exchanged smiles and went our separate ways. At that time, we were just two ordinary people doing ordinary things.
The thing is, he wasn't ordinary people and he didn't do ordinary things. He was an extraordinary person who did extraordinary things. He enriched the knowledge we have of our universe and that is a rare thing indeed.
I don't mind admitting that this morning's announcement of his death has greatly upset me.
I'm also OK with the fact that his wheelchair is probably more intelligent than me.
The world was a better place for having him in it.
