If you say his "master" was sending him to the matches, then surely it must be easier to courtside bet then we thought?
I mean if this "master" is outsourcing people to do the trading for him then it must be easy?

That's why I was asking Peter what sort of technology these guys are usingHuman123 wrote:If you say his "master" was sending him to the matches, then surely it must be easier to courtside bet then we thought?

Hi all,
I think this can be broken down into two parts.
1. Hardware/Software
I guess the options are smart phone or net book/ipad. Smart phones are small and discreet but have less grunt than a good net book. I imagine the best software to have would take advantage of a set of fairly generic commands such as back 10000 runner 1 etc. Its all about speed here. Put this in a nice clear user interface which needs the minimum of user interaction to achieve what your after.
I'm unsure as to the rules of what you can take into various sporting venues so this may be a deciding factor of what hardware you can get away with.
I think it would be advantageous that your software interact with betfair though a vps running a "middle man" program who actually deals with bet placement but more importantly can automatically deal with loss of connection from your court side device. Imagine a situation where you have opened a position and your battery dies in your chosen device or you lose signal. If your connecting to BF directly your pretty much helpless with out phoning in a close bet etc. A better situation would be to have the court side application tell the middle man software "hey im still here" every 15 seconds. If your middle man software doesn't receive this signal it will execute some predefined exit strategies to protect you to some extent.
2. Connection
With regards to the actual method of connection to the internet I can see three options. 3g Sim based access, wifi access and satellite internet access.
3g access is probably the most readily available (its built into smart phones). You can even grab a 3g dongle to put in your net book to enable internet access over the 3g network. I have never been to a really large sporting event but I have been to many large festivals and until recently phone access has been horrendous (although i think this is due to their location in the countryside). Thousands of handsets sharing limited resources resulting in poor signal and dropped calls/connections. This situation would be obviously bad for court side trading. Perhaps someone who has been to large events can comment. Of course your smart device may fall back on the slower but potentially more available GPRS or GSM networks in this situation.
Wifi access is an interesting one as i presume these large sporting venues must have wireless networks with internet access to cater for player/managers/officials and other business related activities. Whether you could get on to the wifi is another matter. I imagine if you knew the right people and had some "persuading" money it could be achieved. Whether or not the signal would reach court side is another matter.
Satellite internet access im not too familiar with. I had a quick look at some websites offering it. It seems the most portable option is tethering your device to a satellite phone. The data transfer speeds are SLOW though (comparable to GSM). I think this would further necessitate the VPS with middleman software discussed earlier if only to reduce the amount of data you need to transfer to get stuff done.
You could also have some more elaborate setups with custom connection hardware. Possibly using the radio spectrum as a go between you and an off-site connection to the internet.
This is quite an interesting subject and given the right circumstances (i.e. you can program using the BF api) and a bit of cash (maybe £1000 to be generous)you could sort yourself out with a custom solution.
I guess right now you could do exactly this using the Bet angel app(im sure i saw an ipad release) and the BetAngel VPS for a lot cheaper.

Clock beaters can earn a lot of money, at least they used too, significant sums. So they have been able to invest a lot in ensure they can continue to beat the clock. Betfair nor the gambling comission have ever really addressed the matter IMHO. But the ATP is really hot on people using laptops or acting suspiciously now, so you would expect to get picked up quickly if you do this sort of thing in an obvious manner. But that hasn't stopped them, there is always a way.
Lots of people have clocked onto this though, so like in any industry or neat idea it attracts competition and that has meant a bit of a turf war and reduced benefit for clock beaters through increased competition.
Somebody, another API vendor, told me a few years ago that their biggest customer was an inrunning player who earned over £1m in a year. He alleged he was an SIS engineer! You can sort of believe that, so who knows what is happening out there?

Messing around on Nadal and Murray this evening, nothing to be done on Nadal so lost a little. But Murray match is proving pretty good and I am all green all round. Just looking for another way in now.
I've managed to find a new strategy in Tennis this week. Just playing at the moment but it lets me take a constant position at the end of each game. I think I've left it too late to do anything serious in the US Open as I need to perfect it and find the weak spots but it's looking promising. Will do some more work on it using Tennis Trader when the tournament is over.

This is just fantastic, perfect trading scenario.
Best game I've ever traded - although still plenty of time for me to cock it up! Thinking I should maybe knock it on the head now and just enjoy the rest of the drama...
