US Racing - How efficient is the market?
Just looking for a bit of opinion from those who bet on the US races. When I look, there always appears to be little volume and the resulting huge spreads. Unfortunately, I never get on nearer race time. Therefore, I was wondering just how efficient is the market for the US races?

Hi, I trade some of these races and I think there has been a clear evolution in the latest months, as book % are getting shorter.

There are definitely opportunities to make money on the US racing if you have the right strategies.
The spreads can be quite big as well as the market volatility but you can use this to your advantage.
If you ask for the price and are patient enough to get matched then you should be able to close your trade for a good number of ticks profit or hold the trade without too much risk.

Is a good site to get a guide of morning prices and look for good value, also they have limited live streaming.
Granted, the US racing isn't going to make you rich but it can give you a great understanding of how markets work in slow motion.

That's an interesting view that I share, I look at these markets as learning.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a reasonably successful strategy in the UK and was looking to expand it. However, it relies on the market being fully efficient. If there are still opportunities for value (albeit limited) then I suspect it may not be entirely suitable for me yet. Thanks again!

US markets do create some great trading opportunities at times.

I've been trading some of these markets and found you can make a few ticks profit but lack of liquidity means you need to keep an eye on stake sizes.
Also, what is going on with the off times? A lot of races have been going off very early (sometimes up to 7 or 8 minutes) and I have been caught a couple of times so now only trade the races on ATR.

It is a common occurrence and has been for some time so I wouldn't expect this to change anytime soon.
As long as you know there is a possibility that this might happen then you can simply watch the race on tv or through betfair live video. Then just make sure you are done and dusted before they start to load.

Yes, it's harder to time the market on US racing, make sure you have some kind of live feed when trading

Yep been caught a few times, you must have live pictures (ATR) to be safe or when audio on BA says 30 seconds get out you can get some good profits thouCaerMyrddin wrote:Yes, it's harder to time the market on US racing, make sure you have some kind of live feed when trading

I'm affraid that isn't enough, as many races start up to 10 minutes before schedule!or when audio on BA says 30 seconds get out you can get some good profits thou
I built a file to determine what races were safe to trade but been caught twice nevertheless. Fortunately it added to my P&L, but now I only trade races when I can see them

I've been trying to get more live feeds, but it hasn't been easy, anyone can help?

Do you not use the betfair live video?
As far as I am aware they cover all the US races.

With massive delay sometimes.
I've been caught yesterday and lost €150, when using betfair video. They were still loading the first horse when the market was suspended. Lesson learnt, I won't trust this feed anymore
Red Rooster. I won't forget that horse in the near future...

Yikes! Sorry to hear that.

They have a live stream at the above site. For me the delay is much shorter than BetFair but that might be because I'm in Mexico on the doorstep of the US.
You only get 30 mins a day of live streaming but by changing browsers you can get another 30 mins and so on.
Probably worth giving it a try unless you are too shaken up from your experience.
