If worst comes to worst and they somehow manage to get the levy introduced on betfair, I was thinking of the best places to avoid it.

Obviously Gibraltar would be a prime choice given that the bookies themselves seem to be partial to the territory, good weather, same language plus the tax treatment would be the same as mainland UK. However property prices out there seem astronomical to me. I don't suppose any of you good bookie folk out there have a few small back offices that we can rent? Maybe some tips on wining and dining out there?

Personally I find Gibralter a bit ugly anyway so next on the list was Monaco with its tax free status. However with even higher property prices and the prospect of paying over €10 for a hotdog made me think twice about that one. Maybe this is more in Peter's price range but not mine ;) (not yet anyway!)

I think the perfect compromise would have to be Andorra. Totally income tax free, great for skiing in winter and hiking in summer, plus just a couple of hours away from beaches in Spain and France. Catalan can be a problem though, I speak serviceable French and Spanish and yet many of them flatly refuse to speak either of these, even though they know the languages. As for english, forget it!

Of course I suppose with a proxy server and an account in the right country, frankly you could trade from anywhere without paying.

A full list of different countries tax rates can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_rates_around_the_world . The 3-5% rate in Jamaica looks pretty interesting for the more adventurous levy dodgers out there, with 5 hours time difference at this time of year racing would start at 9AM and you'd be done by lunchtime, leaving the rest of the day to enjoy paradise (in a state of the art bullet proof vest ;))

You can always come to Portugal. Smooth weather and no law on gambling, which means to taxes to be paid ;)

I didn't like Andorra, full of dodgy Brits.

I would say somewhere like Greece could be nice as it is GMT+2 so you have most of the day to go to the beach and then the horses start late in the afternoon.

I thought the Portuguese were already fed up with the amount of Brits living in the Algarve!

Well, I am not, as I don't live there. :D

A few years ago there was some tension, after some brits replaced the portuguese flag by her majesty's on some locations and everyone was really upset. There were some places where their houses were vandalized at night, but I think that is behind back now.

I always spend summer vacations in Algarve and I must say I think the locals are always friendlier towards the brits rather than us.

One the reasons I started using a VPS quite a few years ago was so I could travel and keep a rock solid connection to Betfair. It gave me the flexibility to retain the same set up but feel like I was still behind my desk. It's a very liberating feeling to move to a different location and carry on as normal.

I still tend to do most of my travelling during the winter months, when I'm not going at it hammer and tongs. So I'd suggest a few traders give it a try. You can find some wonferful locations and you can pick and choose time zones to suit.

With regards to the VPS, does Guardian & Excel work exactly the same way as normal?

Hi LeTiss,
Yes it works exactly the same way. I've used it lots from abroad (although in my case, it is often just setting things up in a morning and then checking the results each night).

if you are manually trading then you will be somewhat dependent on the local connection
Thanks

I gave the Bet Angel VPS a one month trial and I thoroughly recommend it (I'm currently residing on the other side of the world in NZ). There is a very slight delay in taking an action (like pressing a key) before it registers on the VPS (which is not that noticeable and just feels a bit like sticky keys), and everything running on the VPS itself is super-fast and reliable. You can simply down-load a free trial of Microsoft office and use your Excel spreadsheets that way.

[The only reason I stopped using it is because I wasn't yet making a profit, but I intend to resubscribe to the VPS again soon]

Quite apart from trading and betting, a VPS is a really cool thing to have in any case, since you can install any programs you want on there and these programs can access the net 24/7 even while you sleep.

I've been trading from Mexico for the last 3 or 4 years. As the internet speeds have increased it has become more and more enjoyable.

However there are still too many powercuts for my liking.

Through the summer UK Racing starts at 8am and around 6am in the winter so read into that as you wish. I like it cause I can trade through the morning and I still have the rest of the day to do what I want. I guess it depends on how much of a morning person you are. I dont think I ever recovered from my milk round!

I'm not using the VPS at the moment as my connection seems fine without it and don't always get the chance to trade because of my job but if I ever start trading full time then I will use it once again (and probably move to the beach).

I have tried to find other traders in Mexico but I think I am the only one!
