Hi

I am a newbie (obviously)
Looking at BA Academy video Placing Your First Trade I have had the following demonstrated:

The guy did a MakeMarket on Wayleigh Station the Back was 7 and the Lay was 7.2. He does the MakeMarket and Hey Presto the Back is immediatly matched and it shows the unmatched Lay at 7!!!!!
When he confirms the Trade in the Matched Bets area it shows a Back at 7.2 and the Lay at 7!!!

This is not what happened!
The Back was 7 and the Lay was 7.2.
Invariably, a Make Match shows The Back to be lower than the Lay.

Am I missing something here?

Cheers

The 'make market' always places/offers the bets at the best reverse price so its impossible for it to ever place the lay bet at higher odds than the back bet.

See image below, the back bet is at 36.0 and the lay bet at 30.0

Glossary time again?
In gambling parlance, making a book is the practice of laying bets on the various possible outcomes of a single event. Traditionalist would argue that placing money either side of the spread on one selection isn't market making, it's scalping with offers.

I think the term 'market maker' has sprung out of financial trading and worked its way onto the exchange.

Oh I know where it's sprung from :) There's always been a tendancy for terms to be stolen from sports tradings more glamorous cousin rather than its humble origins. People have been placing bets and laying them off (or the reverse) for donkey's years, but put the numbers on a computer screen and suddenly everyone's gordon gecko. I'm a boring traditionalist, I prefer to see what Ladbrokes do as market making, and sticking some money up either side as scalping, either way it certainly doesn't make you Goldman Sachs. ;)

Market makers in financial markets offer a price to buy and sell with a spread in the middle, which is what you do on sports markets when you click the make market button. If you offer prices on all selections you would be making a book.

Fair point. I don't mind withdrawing a comment when it's shown to be less than accurate.

But you're right about the Gordon Gekko bit though...
