Hi. I live in a village with average 'max' broadband speed via BT Broadband. Are there any traders out there with similar speed challenges who have upgraded to Bet Angel Professional Server Edition - if so, has this made much of a difference to your connection and trading speed and is 'stickiness' gone or less of a problem?

Also, have you had any luck getting better basic broadband speeds with other LLU Broadbrand providers (eg. non-BT) - I'm wondering if a combination of that AND Bet Angel Pro Server Edition might help put an end to the frustrations of a slow connection when the rest of the village is online!

Any help or advice really appreciated.

Cheers, MoonMan

...Forgot to say my average BT Broadband speed where I live is around 5mbs, and sticky when others are online. Would Bet Angel Pro Server Edition help?

Cheers, MoonMan

If you drop a note to support they may be able to help you squeeze more out of your existing connection. We have left the connection options open so people can get the best out of the product but sometimes people leave them unmodified which can produce a poorer performance. The new connection settings in the latest beta have several options to help you tweak your existing connection.

You should try that before trying the VPS but that is available on a trial anyhow so you can find out if it suits.

I wrote a detailed reply but it was lost by a forum time out.

I have used Zen and they are excellent with both speed and support. They are more expensive than others but if you are trading then the extra cost is worth it. If you just have ADSL then it is all via the BT network but suppliers like Zen are generally better at calibrating your profile.

Try this Broadband Availability Checker and see what is available for you.

5meg lol, your lucky I get 1.5meg. Although overall speed is related to it the main thing you want is a decent latency/ping, for instance my ping is 23m/s and I currently have 1.5meg connection yet my friend has 7 meg but his ping is 78m/s (lower the better as it's the time it takes for you to get info), so although overall speed is involved it's not main reason.
I had an issue like you with it getting "sticky" at certain points of the day and mine was due to my ISP traffic shaping/throttling since I've moved to Xilo I've had no problems at all.
Both Zen and Xilo are more expensive than most providers but you get what you pay for IMO and for the sake of a few extra £ a month it's worth it in the long run.

Thanks JollyGreen and Mike and I'll be sure to look into Xilo and Zen. One final question, can you tell me how I do the 'ping' test to check response time? I didn't realise that you could get a more efficient performance out of a slower overall speed. Many thanks and best, MoonMan

A one off test of a Ping will not always give you the full picture. The total speed of connection is not always important but the ability to maintain a set level is imperative for stability. There is a relationship between the upstream/downstream speeds and the ping - I won't bother with the long explanation. There is a great new site where you can measure the "jitter" on your line and this will give you a much better view of your connection

Visit Jitter and it will grade your connection
