My IT security knowlege is basic at best.

My 'firewall' is asking me to create a list of Trusted Networks.

Does BA have an IP address, address range and subnet which I should enter to allow hassle free trading?

Typically a firewall will ask you to give permission to an application to connect to the internet if you approve that application it will not ask you again.

Which firewall is it? What version of windows are you running? There are sure to be many tutorials on the web to assist in basic its configuration and operation

Let me know and i'll see if I can dig one up for you.

Networking (especially network security) is quite a complicated area for the unfamiliar user so any attempt to articulate what to do it would probably only confuse the issue further. Best bet is a tutorial will lots of screen shots.

Tash,

Im running Mcafee Host Intrusion Prevention on a Windows XP OS. Do you or anyone know what the IP address for BA is ? When I logon to BA am I right to assume that I am routed to Betfair via the BA server ? If so I am thinking that I would need both the Betfair and Bet Angel IP addresses entered into my Trusted Hosts lists ?? I may have misinterpreted this function though - anything is possible !

Hiya,

I had a quick scan but I couldn't find any good tutorials :( The product you have doesn't seem to be a standard firewall, but a combination of protection systems. I'm afraid I jut don't know enough about that product to tell you how to do it.

I was going to suggest you call their tech support but a quick look at their site reveals its a convoluted process and to speak to someone on a phone actually incurs a fee(£1 a min phone call for a max charge of £15). Did you buy this product or are you trialling it?

There is a manual here
https://kc.mcafee.com/resources/sites/M ... _Guide.pdf

But I assume you already have that.

I don't believe that your copy of Bet Angel routes its connection to Betfair through BA hq servers.Although your copy of Bet Angel does communicate with BA hq to check for updates and subscription info etc. BA should be able to answer this better.

Sorry I couldn't help more. Perhaps if you have a tech savy friend or relative you could ask them to pop round and assist in its configuration.

Yep. Purchased multi license pack for all my office desktops and laptops. Total package is McAfee Endpoint Protection. Cost me a pretty penny (that should be pound!) but other than current problems I have 100% postive support for protective measure provided. As a side issue it even warns me when the likes of Hewlett Packard drivers are trying to auto connect to the net or Google Earth is trying to apply updates. I prefer to have control over when to block these so as not to be in a situation where I have reduced CPU or experience shutdown to reboot requests half way through a trading session - most annoying and dangerous ! Mcaffee tech suport has explained my issues of slowness are a result of a 'suspect' ip address being blocked. Most common denominator is when I am online with BA so will ask BA direct and see how I go. Thanks for your help.

If your system is being unresponsive open task manager, go to the process tab and sort the list by the CPU column. You can now see which processes are hogging your cpu. However, be aware that some processes hide themselves from the task manager.

To see them all you need a product like Security Task Manager.

If you know the suspect ip, you can visit http://whois.domaintools.com/, enter the ip and see what it turns up. Although the information you get can be a little cryptic.

FYI

Spoke to BA support and they advised " the software first interrogates our authentication server at login. From then on it is connected directly to Betfair and no market data is routed via our servers. A ping is made to our server every 15 to 30 mins to ensure the licence has not expired.

The ports used are 80 & 443. Some company firewalls may block these. And some firewall software may do so if you have set to the absolute highest level of protection.
"

Thanks

Yep, that makes sense port 80 is the default port for HTTP and port 443 the default for port HTTPS. In other words the standard ports your web browser uses.
