Excuse my ignorance of tennis but why is it that women only play 3 sets and the men 5 yet get the same prize money at Wimbledon?

Halep has often looked like a champion this tournament. Has looked more impressive as she went through each round.

I'd guess its a tradition which goes all the way back to when it was 'Ladies' tennis and they were deemed unable to last for 5 sets.

I'd like to see it changed though, certainly no reason why modern players couldn't do it and im sure I've heard S.Williams in the past say she'd welcome for that to happen
