I was just wondering if anyone has any statistics on how often the pre-race favourite loses?

I have heard that the bookies make alot of money on the favourite losing, so do individuals do the same on betfair?

Part of the reason the bookies make money when the favourites lose is because more money is generally bet on the favourite than on any other horse.

As PeteMalta pointed out, you can see how favourites perform using adrianmassey.com. What you'll find is that, over a large number of races, the market odds are a pretty good reflection of a horse's true chances. So IMHO, there's no mileage in blindly laying favourites, particularly when you take into account Betfair's commission.
