jeff,
i think jollygreens post above sums it up nicely
BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY 2010
Come on Jeff!!!Ferru123 wrote:I think the award should have gone to Graeme Swann.
What the cricketers have done in Australia is nothing short of rare and extraordinary. Unlike our footballers, our cricketers have played with tremendous passion, and pulled off an amazing comeback. I'd say that's far more impressive than winning the Grand National...

Swanny is a good bowler. Only recently established himself properly into lets all be honest an average England team.
AP has been at the very top of his profession for 15 years, existing on the amount of food that most of us leave on the side of our plate after Sunday lunch. here are a few stats I have dug out.
Raced 31,00 miles
3,353 winners (oct 31st)
15 successive times champion jockey
Depending on where you look between 680 - 1000 falls. (imagine jumping off a motorbike at 25 - 30 miles an hour without all the protection that many times)
Travels over 75,000 miles a year to races
It's not just about the GN. That is the race that has captured the public imagination. Did Ryan Giggs win it cos he had a decent season last year? Or was it because he has had 20 great seasons?
I cannot perceive the SPOY award going to a more deserving candidate than this humble and unassuming man. He is a credit to his sport and I reckon a few of us who trade horse racing professionally would agree that he has made us all a few quid at 1 time or another. I was happy to spend a few quid voting for him.
I have to admit the emotion of his win got to me a bit, my wife has been taking the p*** all morning

Come on Jeff. " In terms of his cumulative achievement to his sport, he may well surpass Swann" ?????????? What a ridiculous statement
Convincing winner

But do you not think that those facts make him a deserving candidate for a lifetime achievement award, not a sportsman of the year award?
When someone wins the Oscar for best actor, it's generally because they've put in a superb performance in a particular film, not because they've had a brilliant career. Do you not think the same principle should apply here?
As for Giggsy winning the award last year, I think no-one was more surprised than Giggs himself! I suspect his victory was the result of an internet campaign (possibly started by people who'd had a sneaky bet when he was at 100-1!).mugsgame wrote:Did Ryan Giggs win it cos he had a decent season last year? I agree that that's a convincing victory, and I have to respect the vote of the public (even if I'm not sure they got the right man!).
