Testing if Unmatched is a Back or a Lay

It's easy to test if there is an Unmatched bet outstanding on a runner but how could I test if it is a Back bet or a Lay bet? For example I only want to place a Back bet (or Lay bet) if there is no Back (or Lay) bet outstanding on the runner. Any outstanding bets of the opposite would be ignored.
