If I wanted to get Skype, would I be able to use a normal phone, or would I need some special hardware?
Thanks
Jeff
Skype
Jeff,
You can use a set of headphones with a mic, I got some really good Logitech ones for about £20, these plug into a usb port.
Skype is really easy to use. I use it to talk to my brothers and sisters who live in Australia, and it's free if they are on Skype too.
Some PC's have built in mics and cams. My iMac does, however I prefer the headphones. You could even get wireless headphones which means you could wonder around and talk.

Thanks Mugsgame
As an aside, I wonder how long it is before the public at large starts to think 'Why am I paying BT for my phone calls when I can chat with someone on Skype for free?!?'

Because you still need your BT landline to access the internet. But plenty of people these days don't use their landline for actual calls as you can get them online or included in your mobile phone package.
The Skype credit balance expires after 180 days of inactivity. That's in their terms. Google it. Even if you have lots of money in your account they will take it all away. So be careful with that. I lost money with them, and after about 10emails they offered some vouchers as a refund. From then I use http://www.voipdiscount.com
