Never seen a horse getting whipped like that at the start of a race, just to get a lead! Shame they didn't have sectional times in those days, would make interesting reading.

Dont know how long that race was ? But Seabiscuit broke the track record with a time of 1:56

When I saw the start I was wondering if it was a quarter-mile race, half expecting them to pull up at the winning post!

If the time was 1:56 I'm guessing it was 9.5 furlongs or thereabouts. Very few horses have covered 10 furlongs in under 2 minutes. Secretariat averaged just that - over an extra 2 furlongs in his Belmont Stakes romp, well worth watching if you haven't seen it, or worth watching again if you have. :)
