In time people will start to realise imo that it isn't the virus that the vast vast majority of people need to worry about but the financial implications it is going to have on the world after we (the world) have talked ourselves into a mess that is going to have implications well into the next decade.

How long do people think it will be before the twitterati changes the hashtag from "Shuttheschools" to "Opentheschools"
When schools shut in Northern Ireland over coronavirus it will be for at least 16 weeks, Arlene Foster has said.
The job losses and struggles many many families are going to experience hasn't dawned upon so many imo.

The number of deaths caused by the virus directly will be hugely surpassed I think by the number of deaths caused by the actions taken to fight it.

Completely agree, to flatten this curve is to flatten how many industries? I work for Aerospace & this is gonna tank them completely imo, they're already under massive stress from the Boeing events, the share price has hit £1.20 last time I checked.

On the flip side, if millions were to get Ill at once then it would probably have just as much of an impact... I'm no economist so my opinion is far from read worthy but I think the huge sell off says it all, its gonna take some length of time to recover from this.

"China could have prevented 95 per cent of coronavirus infections if its measures to contain the outbreak had begun three weeks earlier, research from the University of Southampton suggests."

I'm not sure how you work that out. Job loss doesn't equal death and doing nothing might cause more economic hardship in the long run. We just don't know. Workers in Italy are striking because they don't feel safe going to work. Are you going to force them to go in?

I had a wander round Tesco to see what secondary items were running low:

Bin bags
Domestos
Part-baked baguettes and rolls
Tomato sauce
Tinned spaghetti

It's not all bad news - there's a huge surplus of Easter eggs.

Its kinda still abstract until you see the numbers like this (if accurate) Scary stuff, especially the Italian numbers :( Don't think it needs the soundtrack though

Also sobering to think its a new virus so even when the worst of it is over its still going to be around

Think there is actually a correlation between rising unemployment and an earlier death - plus Brad Pitt mentioned it in the big short so it must be true

I may not be an expert in the field but when hundreds of actual experts are concerned about the actions undertaken and expressed them in a open letter, then I think the general public has every right to be a little worried.

The government already knows that many people are going to die whatever they do. They just dont want to admit it as it will cause panic. Bit like during the blitz, they knew where Germany would target but chose not to relocate everyone, only children were sent to the countryside. Depends who you believe on the number but it could be anywhere between 500 and 500,000 deaths in the UK amoungst the elderdly, underlying health conditions or smokers. I am no expert but i suspect allot of it will come down to luck unless everyone is going to stay indoors for the next 6 months and hope they find a vaccine.

When have experts ever agreed on complexed matters? When the stakes are high, whatever strategy is adopted will receive criticism. Better to have a strategy in place and executed than waste time arguing over the best strategy.

Well fuck it. It is what it is. Can't control anything other than what we do ourselves so head down, wash hands and crack on.

Rather annoyingly my eldest has started a persistent cough today. No fever and it is a typical cold but will now be at home for the next week due to the latest school guidelines.

It's going to be a looong few months!!!

Best of luck, I hope your daughter recovers quickly from whatever it is.

It really irritates me when they say wash your hands more frequently. Reminds me of the old ads that said eat less, drink less and exercise more. Some people are tea-total anorexics who are being told to eat less and presumably cut back on water!!!

I heard on Sky News that it's worrying that 25% of people have not changed the frequency of hand-washing, but perhaps the worrying part should be that 75% of people weren't washing their hands frequently enough before Covid-19.

Personally, I wouldn't eat a bag of crisps and spread the grease on my fingertips all over my keyboard and touchpad without washing my hands - I didn't need Covid-19 to encourage me.
