All my generation of gen x's had the boring 70s (oil shock, inflation, brown suits), the 80s (87 crash, Berlin wall, falkands, failure of communism, samantha fox), 90s (gulf war i), 00s (9/11, middle east wars, islamic terrorism, financial system crisis), 10s (more islamic terrorism, continued middle east etc).

But nothing like wwi, spanish flu, the depression and wwii.

And millenials etc pffffttt - they are the softest most coddled generation in the history of 2000 of releative human civilisation. I'm not heading for the hills, but the level of panic is extraordinary and so there might be some fraying at the edges of civil society here and it seems like we might have an event more equivalent to wwii but not the duration.
I agree that modern man has become soft in general but from what I see millennials overall seem relatively chill regarding the whole situation and mostly just poke fun at it, it's the middle-aged and older people that seem to be panicking the most, they're the ones that I see losing their shit so far. Maybe even on the forum last couple days :? I've not been reading their arguments but saw some strong words, and the real crisis has barely started.

I wouldn’t believe much of what comes out of China. Everything is heavily controlled by the government.

If this did start there in December then Europe can look forward to 3 months of lockdown. Allot of businesses will go bust and people laid off. Small companies won’t survive with no income

As there is no vaccine and probably won’t be for at least 12 months what happens if it comes back ?

That's a good throwback, missed that one.

Never thought I'd say these words but thank God for social media :) In times when extended periods of isolation and solitude are necessary there are many ways to stay connected and facetime loved ones etc.

That being said, a lot of people will not be used to being cooped up indoors for long with so much uncertainty around them and their jobs, so even if they don't get the real fever they might still fall prey to cabin fever so a lot of online communities may get a lot more toxic than usual, with people having nothing better to do with their day than vent some of their frustrations online. So might be a good idea to avoid forums and such for a while to not get dragged into these things, hopefully not this one but you know what I mean :)

Wonder why ski resorts were the launch pad for this in Europe.
Is it the apres ski socialising?
Or is it something about the way breath condenses in cold environments?
Or is there some close connection between wuhan and ski resorts?
I mean the Chinese LOVE London, but we got zip until recently.
Quite odd.

The elderly who might be expected to isolate aren't generally well connected on social media or possibly even able to cope without daily help. For those who are younger and suffering from 'cabin fever' it's a stark lesson in what it's like to be alone for months on end as so many elderly people are. Being on Facebook and watching Netflix all day isn't being isolated, isolation is when the highlight of your day is watching Tipping Point, alone, again.

Another consequce... I was talking to a cousin who's a prison guard .... She says that rumours are spreading that all prison visits might be suspended and if they are then things will really kick off. They're massively understaffed already and assaults are an almost weekly occurrence so the staff are deeply concerned for their safety and the safety of vulnerable prisoners.

This is why Italian prisons are rioting like I mentioned last week I think. That is a good point about the elderly, I tried to teach my grandparents who are in their 70s to use laptops/tablets for ages but they are very resistant to the idea, so only managed to hook up my grandad with an old fashioned cellphone for emergencies.

Considering tests are now only being done on hospital admissions you expect the percentage to climb, you need to try harder, Frank.
