I very much like Denmark's unemployment benefit system. :D

"Unemployed workers in Denmark get 90 percent of previous earnings for up to 104 weeks"
It's a slight simplification. It's not quite universal. You have to pay into what it akin to a state run unemployment fund every month to be eligable, and have done so for at least a year. Also - obviously - it's only if you get laid off (not if you resign), and you have to apply for jobs every week and can't turn down a job offer. So not a freebie two year vacation. It's just solidarity. Imagine that ;)

I'm in Cairns, which is North Queensland (tropical climate)
I'm in the UK, which is close to the arctic circle (currently enjoying one of the 8 days a year you don't need your coat on).

I've gone right off you John, picking mangos FFS. ;)
Well... honestly, I never understood why anyone would wanna live where its cold :) I sometimes think about the people in Russia and wonder...why the hell do they live there..its not like they're stupid right? (or is that Canadians?)... I mean like, at some point in time over the past gazzilion years, someone would have chosen to live there of their own volition, and thought, yep...this is a good place to live...I'm gonna stay...great place for my fams to grow up...

(obviously I am ignoring the fight for resources, gazzillions of years ago they were not blessed with 1000's of mango trees that take too much effort to pick)

I mean I guess I can understand the UK, you guys got potatoes right? Those things are awesome, and worth living in the cold for.

I think most people who end up on unemployment had some sort of commitments before they found themselves in that predicament. Going from having a good job to unfortunately not having one was around before Corona. Our govt justify the pitiful assistance as 'encouraging people back to work', even if there's no job to go to.
Well that is true...kind of makes my reasoning moot. Gotta be a vote grabbing exercise :)

In truth, government and all its policies and stuff is something I've spent very little time thinking about. I've always thought that's its something I can't change so I've never spent time on it (always been a donkey voter). What's caused me to think a little bit about it is that, I am employed 20 hours a week part time. And...f man....those unemployed guys get paid more than me! haha.

I lean towards a generous unemployment system being a good idea but without some form of incentive to do the things that people don't want to do...well...not sure that'll end well :)

Saw similar encouraging news. Welch medics are using blood plasma taken from people who've had it and survived, and giving it to patients that are critical. The idea being that it contains antibodies to effectively seed the patients own response where it's failed to do so itself. (source BBC web news). It's been used on other viruses like ebola and signs are promising.

They're trying to track down survivors to donate blood but so few tests means finding confirmed case survivors is tough.

If we are going to be "led by the science" we need brighter scientists to lead. If they can't even decide if the public should be using face coverings "until they get more data" - at the same time they'll demonstrate that coughs and sneezes aerosolize the virus and even show spread patterns using fancy camera tricks. They attribute R0 numbers to diseases without seeming to fully grasp that R0 is actually a combination of the disease and community hygiene norms. Chris Whittey more and more seems like he wouldn't be able to predict a reasonable list of six possible league winners in a season until the 90th minute of the final game of the season.

I notice that the C19 virus is widely reported to kill at the proportion of 60% men and 40 % women. Is the virus ignoring all the other genders we've discovered in recent years?

Aah, it's now a little clearer why Trump wanted to suspend their future payments....

The 40 genders are the overround, you'll have to go back & check its std variance, hope this helps.

Thanks for that james - I was worried that it might have been Cisgender biased reporting.
