I believe in face masks after seeing how almost universally they are worn in South Korea, Hong Kong & Singapore. I was wearing mine 6 weeks ago, have not ventured out without it. That will continue.
It's more a psychological thing though isn't it. Face masks will be worn by everybody so people feel they can restart life again. They are only useful for people who have a disease to stop it spread, mass use it just a waste. So it's purely appealing to the behavioural aspect of the pandemic. You need to be seen to be doing something.

This whole thing is a great study of the behavioural aspects of people. See how road use is creeping up again.

South Korea had/has a leading trace/test/isolate strategy. (Forget China their figures look like pure invention now).
It's bugger all to do with masks. Think about it!
If you observe social distancing and hand washing and breaking the link between sources of infection ie stuff and your face.
Germany did the same as South Korea.
Face masks as a solution is bollocks.
You seem extremely arrogant with your assertions, I know several people in Hong Kong who are not stooges of communist China who believe in face masks. Hong Kong is not sweeping under the carpet. Feel free to disagree.

I do disagree. You're comparing a population the have 'been ther and got the t-shirt' with a population that think playing eith your phone and chewing your nails before entering a supermarket is acceptable behaviour.
Face masks can't mask stupidity. And the virus is a product of evolution, that also does not recognise stupidity.

Big hint from Boris about the imposition (advice) about the general wearing of face masks.
That cheeses me off.
As a spectacle wearer i know the plume of breath that spurts out from a facemask.
Perhaps it means breath is projected 1 metre rather than 2 metre.
But until all people that REALLY need PPE have them we shouldn't provoke people into panic-buying something that is irrelevent in a properly observed social-distancing/hygienic environment.
When the guy behind you in the queue sneezes you'll be glad he's wearing a face mask. ;)
I've seen people playing with their phones, chewing their nails and the grabbing a trolley (ignoring the sanitisation station). Every face mask could potentially be a sink of virus due to people wearing the same one, day in day out, under the illusion that its a competent barrier.
It isn't.
Social-distancing and hygiene are highly effective!
It's wrong to dismiss an idea because you think it won't be properly implemented. It would be better to advertise, as they usually do, the correct way to use masks and give people the chance to make it work. Not everyone will wear the same mask for a week.

It reminds me of the annoying advice given to dieters: do not weigh yourself every day or you'll get despondent when your weight goes up!!!

A better and fairly simple approach is to take a rolling median and educate about weight fluctuation.

OK. In another world. We sit across a pub table wearing facemasks that are incapable of blocking the virus. We talk/laugh (probably given its you :-) . Would you feel safe in that scenario, for yourself or friends/relatives you might infect unwittingly?
Thats all I'm saying masks are not the silver bullet and I believe they could lull people into poor social-diatancing/hygiene behaviour.
Anyway, that's me done. Stay safe everybody!!!

Isn't that a good enough reason? Ultimately spread is biggest challenge.

The problem you describe isn't wearing face masks but sitting close together in a pub. If people think they can ignore social distancing because they got a face mask, they're the problem, not face masks, which can protect people when used appropriately.

Unnecessary targets!! Matt Hancock's been frantically been trying to meet his 100,000 test deadline to save his face. Unlikely to achieve his target, at least he can now relax for a while with the pressure off. Now it's just the small matter of saving thousands of lives.

Well he easily surpassed the 100,000 target just about all the media and opposition politicians said he had no hope of reaching. 'm waiting to hear all the "I got it wrong" messages from them but I doubt I will hear any … and remember they are not trying to make political points from CV19!! Yeah, right.

I've heard (Sky News) that they changed the method of counting to ensure they meet their target. Less than 85,000 actually reached the lab, over 20,000 were only dispatched. Either way, they should put their energy into managing the crisis and saving lives, not faces.
