I obviously don't know for sure, but I suspect you're right that the car journey excuse was a lie. But even if it was it's not important. So what if he went for a drive to see a castle on his wife's birthday? Who cares ffs? He didn't endanger anyone. It's just spurious justification to try to get him sacked by those with a politically-motivated axe to grind, like, er, arch-Remainer Emily Maitlis...
The BBC has reprimanded Emily Maitlis and admitted she broke impartiality rules with her ridiculously partisan opening monologue on Tuesday's Newsnight.
The clip is shared (and unsurprisingly celebrated) here by David Lammy...

Who cares? Over half the nation including people who weren't allowed to bury their loved ones because a certain selfish hypocrite imposed rules to prevent them, who then excuses himself to go a castle on his wife's birthday. If you struggle to understand why that makes people angry you must have very limited understanding!
You think he didn't endanger anyone? When somebody dies of Covid19 there's no way of knowing where it was contracted so when people act irresponsibility there's no way of knowing how many people will unnecessarily get infected unwittingly. Cummings has undone all the work and effort of the scientific advisors and a lot of people will be less willing to follow the rules, or perhaps will follow them as loosely as Cummings.
You gotta admit though, your mate Dominic is now a laughing stock, he is the national joke. You can't call it a witch hunt, it was his decision and stupidly to mention the eye test, nobody forced that on him.
