Has anyone else had their speed restricted by Virgin in the evening because they downloaded too much (despite having been sold an unlimited broadband service)?

I've just been told that the reason my Betfair connection has been poor at times was because my service is being restricted from 6pm to midnight.

I'm moving house in a month's time, and if Virgin think I'm going to take my service with me, they can go swing!

it depends on what tarif you are on with them. Virgin have been applying this for about 2 years. It never affects my speed. I would suggest you look at routing problems or betfair rather than this affecting your connection to betfair though. Its only volume of data that is throttled not speed of data.

Hi Jimrobo

That's true, although I refuse on principle to upgrade to 50 meg broadband.

My view is that I was sold an unlimited broadband package, so that's what I'm entitled to. It's a bit misleading to tell someone you're selling them a unlimited package, but neglect to add that they'll be restricted if they do.

As regards the speed, the tech guy I spoke to told me that I'd been restricted to 2.5 meg in evening (although it felt more like a dial-up connection at times!). I suppose the only way they can prevent you downloading over a certain amount is by throttling your speed; the alternative would be to suspend your service when you cross a given download limit.

Until the last couple of days, I've had very little to complain about in terms of my connection speed.

My main criticism of Virgin till now is that it can take a few weeks for them to get someone to come around to your house to hook you up when you first sign up.

not really. I would rather pay extra to have a consistent speed rather than know someone who is paying far less than me is taking the mick having consequtive downloads of pirated films/music clogging up the network and physically throttling my speed.

Hi JimRobo

It's not a case of taking the Mick. If someone has been sold an unlimited 10 meg download package (as I was), then surely they are entitled to download as much as they want at that download rate.

If they'd have said to me when I took the package 'If we consider your usage to be excessive, we'll restrict you', then I may have shopped around.

jeff,

there all a bit like betfair with their t&c,
in the case of isp's is a "fair usage policy" they are all cowsons, all of em.

it depends when you took it out really? If it was recently then the fair useage policy is in the tems and conditions. If it was before the fair useage policy was introduced then shopping around wouldn't have got you the same speed as they were giving you. If you had your email registered with them you would have had an email telling you the traffic shapping as it was first called.

I personally don;t see the problem with traffic shaping? It doesn;t affect my trading at all when I get throttled thats if I ever have been. I am guessing I must have been but I havevn't seen any difference in my connection and being a pro trader I can pick up any market behaviour changes extremely quickly. In fact I am for traffic shaping. It keeps my connection working properly and the leeches at bay!

I have to agree with JimRobo, there must be something else amiss if this throttling is having an impact on your trading. They most important thing is the ping response time and if they throttle your bandwidth it won't affect your response. I have used Virgin for many years and the main problems come when they have a routing issue i.e. a slow switch/router somewhere.

It does sound like a routing issue could be your problem assuming there is nothing wrong with your router and modem at home.

Fair or not, all of the ISPs have Fair usage policies although Sky claim they do not throttle their service.

Hi JollyGreen

Most of the time, my connection was fine. However, there were a few moments when it was like wading through treacle! And when you've entered a trade, and Betfair suddenly goes into slow motion and you even wonder if the site's gone down, it's not a good feeling! And I wasn't watching streaming porn videos at the time, if anyone's wondering!

Jeff - do you trade FT, can't remember? Or if even part time make a decent enough amount?

Reason I ask is that if you do perhaps might be worth investing in a second line with another ISP. As losing a day can easily cost you more than what the extra line will cost for a year.

I wish! :)

No (I'm a gambler), although I hope to be good enough to trade professionally one day.

However, if I did trade professionally, I'd fork out for the upgrade to 50 meg and possibly a second line.

if you have the availability for a good adsl line I would recommend a good 6+ meg adsl/adsl2 line over virgin any day. I have both and adsl is a lot more stable than virgin.

I've told Virgin I'm leaving, as I'm moving house today.

Virgin have told me that I need to give 30 days' notice, even though they will be cutting me off this evening!

I've canceled my Direct Debit, and if Virgin think I'm going to be for a service I won't be receiving, I'll see them in court!

BTW, I'm considering going with Sky, but I can't find in plain English something on their website that says 'For line rental and broadband, and nothing else, you'll end up paying £x per month'!

And all of these offers like 'Get the first 3 months at 40% off' wind me up! I don't want to be treated like a moron - I just want to know who will be charging me least per month throughout the term of the contract! Anyway, rant over! :)
