It only appears to drop the temputure because it is cooler outside, they are very inefficient.hgodden wrote:Have to disagree with you there Lennon. The one I have brings the temperature down by 6 degrees or so in 20 to 30 minutes with masses of hot air being expelled by the hose which sticks out the window. I'm not saying they're as good as the permenent ones but if you get one with 12,000 Btu it certainly does the job in an average sized bedroom. If it wasn't for the fact that I have to turn it off while trading due to the noise then after a while I'd be freezing
I have worked in the AC business for over 10 years and temp drops can be very hard to gauge.
Portable AC does a job but not the job everyone expects them to do.
Its funny someone has said to put some ice infront of a fan as you will almost get the same feeling from that

Have to say I am struggling to understand what you are saying lennontrader.
It seems you are saying that all portable air con units do is blow the air around and create the feeling it is cooler when in fact it isn't, basically as a fan does?
You are saying the drop in temperature Hgodden experiences is because the temperature in general has fallen and is not to do with the portable AC unit?
So what does a fixed AC unit do that is different to a portable one? I know fixed ones work from experience of them when I had one in my house in Oz.
Cheers for your input.

I am saying they are very inefficient and are not designed to cool rooms. I am not saying dont get one as they will help just dont expect miracles.
The dont work like a fan, they do remove heat from the air but due to the way they are designed they pump most of it back into the room

Cheers for the reply, still not sure what they are designed for though if not to cool areas down?
If they make the room a little cooler and stop me getting too hot it will be money well spent I think. Can't see too many other options given I can't install anything permanently?

Have used portable air con units in the past and they do the job. Not as efficient as permanent units but that's not an option for most of us.
The biggest problem I can see that affects their efficiency is that you need the window open to hang the hose out to expel the hot air which means you are letting some of the hot air from outside back in. They do cool the room though - if you want to try one first there are numerous places that you can rent one from.

I would have thought just buying some more exhaust hose and running it into another room and out another window would have solved this though.SilentDave wrote:The biggest problem I can see that affects their efficiency is that you need the window open to hang the hose out to expel the hot air which means you are letting some of the hot air from outside back in.
The hose is dirt cheap and you can buy a window kit so that the rest of the window is sealed and the hot air is just expelled for next to nothing off ebay or the like.
I have tried all sorts, I had different fans, one you filled with ice and the air blew through, rubbish.
I've had 3 different mobile air con units, 8000 BTU 12000 BTU and my latest I've had for a couple of years is a 14000 BTU, I think it's great.
I've used it in my garage/home gym during the summer and it blasts really cold air out, yeah you have to put the pipe out the window as it blast out hot air.
I had it on coldest setting in my office, I was out the front talking to a mate for 20 mins, it was a red hot day, I went back up to my office and opened the door and it was like stepping into a fridge!
The only downside is they are loud and you do have to put the pipe out the window (unless you put it through the wall). Apperently they are expensive to run as well.

Yeah, if you can do that you'd be sorted - sounds worryingly like DIY to me thoughandyfuller wrote: I would have thought just buying some more exhaust hose and running it into another room and out another window would have solved this though.

Keeping everything closed is a smart move. It's not like wasps are the only thing in, heat also finds it's way

Hi Andy,
I think it's been mentioned by SilentDave; I'd look at renting one of the portable AC units for a couple of days or for a week to get the idea of just what it could do for you, rather than an expensive mistake. I also thought you only really benefitted from them by keeping the doors/windows closed.
Had to laugh with the bit "if it's 15degs it's BBQ weather". Reminds me of I was a kid on the Exchange trip to Southern France that was in early April.
The family had an apartment in Barcelona so we went there for 4 days over Easter. Whilst playing football on the beach with some French, German and Spanish kids it got a little warm running around.
The other Brit lad and I went swimming in the sea much to the astonishment and amusement of the French hosts who thought we were nuts and would end up with pneumonia!! we could not make them understand that it was just like mid summer in Rhyl
but without a Cathedral

I didn't get one in the end as I ended up forgetting about it and the new place I live doesn't get anywhere near as hot so I haven't really needed one. I may look out for one though in the end of season sales for next year just in case we have a really hot summer
