It is just me, or is the headline a bit inflammatory and misleading, given that the vast majority of men don't shout at women in the street?

BTW, I sent a letter of complaint about the article to the BBC website, and they've invited me to contribute to a future piece on the subject of wolf whistling, suggestive comments, etc. I've no idea what they have in mind, but providing no cross dressing is involved, I'll be up for it!

PS My brief (should I choose to accept it) is as follows:

We are keen to do a follow-up piece which looks at where the line is governing what is appropriate behaviour for men and women towards strangers of the opposite sex.

Paying a woman a compliment, for instance, may in some cases be received in good spirits.

What I would need from you is about 200 words setting out where you stand on this, by end of Thursday. If necessary, we could follow it up with a phone call to you for a quick chat.

Your would be one viewpoint among three or four in the piece. We will probably run the piece early next week.

Anyone any ideas?

Jeff,
As you are struggling a bit stimulating any interest in this thread i thought I'd give you a hand.....

The truth is, everyone knows that most women don't LISTEN, so you need to shout at them :)

Don't know, but there is definitely a double standard with these things.

for example when i used to go to clubs alot when i was younger most nights some random drunk woman would come up to me a pinch my arse or something,
now im not botherd myself about these things but some might be,

you can be sure if i went round clubs pinching random girls arses (something i would never do) i would be ejected from he club in seconds and probably up a sexual harassment charge or something .

Everyones different i suppose and none of us are mind readers, it depends on the person involved and what they find acceptable.

Thanks Steve.

That's an interesting thought, but not one that I think the BBC will want to run with!

BTW, I have to wonder why they asked me to write this thing. Maybe it's because I'm always complaining about their articles (mainly for their left wing opinion pieces - sometimes it's like I'm reading the Guardian, not a politically neutral publication!). Perhaps their thinking is 'At least the so and so won't complain about something he's written himself!'

Quite.

I remember a comedian once saying something like:

'If I looked out of my window and saw my neighbour sunbathing naked in her back garden, I'd be arrested for being a peeping Tom. If she looked out of her window and saw me sunbathing naked in my back garden, I'd be arrested for indecent exposure!'

Sums it up, really...

I didn't click on the link to be honest :) So got my wires crossed.
Most guys who do that stuff are with their mates, have small penis's so need to prove to their pals they are a real man

That made me laugh

It's very true though, there's ridiculous double standards with these things.

There are certainly cases where someone is clearly acting the **** to show that they are the big, hard man. But often I think sometimes guys who wolf whistle or make suggestive comments do so in a good natured way, and often it's received as such.

Years ago, a friend of mine were out on the town around Easter, and my mate approached a women wearing rabbit ears and said something like 'Will you let me into your hutch?', which didn't go down well! This guy was just being playful, and no harm was meant. With hindsight, I think he would have accepted he overstepped the mark, but if men and women didn't behave flirtatiously towards each other, there would be a lot fewer children born each year...

Jeff,

What is wrong with left wing views Comrade?

Nothing, providing you don't mind an unsustainable budget deficit and silly so-called equality laws! :)

But whatever my views on left-wing politics, my complaint is about the BBC's frequent political bias. I'm not happy for my license fee to pay for the BBC to indulge in one-sided reporting!

This is a particularly striking example of BBC bias: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/colu ... aries.html

This is the article (I've written the second of the pieces):

My thanks to Hgodden for helping me turn the first draft from a rambling sociology essay into something that hopefully won't lose the audience after the first sentence! :)

The article is currently at position 3 in the BBC's 'most read' rankings, ahead of 'Surprise inflation fall to 4%', but behind 'Clegg ambushed by Gillian Duffy'!

Good to see people have their priorities right!

I almost spat my coffee out Jeff!

If you're going up to women in the high street and asking them if they come here often, this explains why you turned to internet dating sites

The hypothetical character was not based on me!

But I think that the line, when delivered with self-deprecating irony, may work! :)
