Fair play to you for the apology. I almost joined in a few times but decided to sit out

A very wise boss once told me, after I'd sent out a pretty shitty email, "If you want to post something angry or inflammatory for all to see, save it and step away for an hour. if you still want to send it once the hour's up, it's probably still worth doing"

That advice has saved me a whole heap of trouble over the years :)

I appreciate all the positive responses... time for me to close the chapter on previous negativity, it really is of no use to anyone.

Well done James although 90% of this could have been avoided if some form of forum moderation was in place.

I disagree. My experience of this forum is that it is self-moderating. Euler will intervene if necessary. The freedom we enjoy on here should be respected by everyone. There is no need at all for moderation beyond what we have.
IMO :-)

I think that came in the terms of locking the thread to let people reflect on things. It's a difficult job (imo) being a moderator, the attention of negativity would probably turn to those who moderate. The forum does moderate itself to a certain extent, beyond that Peter has got involved, and I've seen him a few times offering to get involved in some threads *if* forum members thought it was necessary.

Personally I'd much rather take responsibility for my own actions rather than depend on somebody else accepting responsibility to deal with my actions.

I do get that some people think it would be a good idea and I respect their opinion but for reasons above its not something I'd personally like even though some may think its probably safer for people who go off on one like me to save a bit of face.

If someone makes a nasty comment about another forumite, or says something unpleasant like 'what a stupid comment', I think it would be good if the comment were to be deleted and the offender spoken to.

As things are, someone can make a nasty comment, but even if you report it, nothing will happen (unless the post insults Bet Angel itself).

If it`s self moderating why did we end up in the position that we did. It is not much use Euler visiting the thread and shutting it down after the event. IMO

We receive an equal number of reports from all protagonists in any debate, but ultimately it's not the moderator's role to take sides. Neither can they read every post on every thread. The only way to have a sensible debate is to engage sensibly with people on the other side of a debate. We can't be seen to actively restrict or suppress views.

We allow people into the forum despite not being Bet Angel customers, but have often considered restricting that to help this process.

It should be a place to engage in honest debate and discussion around trading. Sometimes threads get highjacked, sometimes emotions get high, but they usual resolve itself.

The forum has grown considerably over time and that wouldn't have happened if the moderators hadn't done their job. If there is something you don't like, object to it and walk away.

It was my lack of, but lesson learned. I think judging by the comments a few people have taken something away from the whole episode. Maybe collective moderation is way forward... you stepped in and commented on that thread in regards to it being off topic etc which was part of my reflection... you didn't involve yourself or take sides, you simply made your point and it had an impact.

In case you can't spot it Jeff, its post like this that antagonise people. Why not take James's apology in the way it was intended and build on it?

For me, that defines the issue of moderation perfectly.
And I would reiterate James's OP was outstanding and all credit to him.

I think some of you need to toughen up a little bit.
