When it comes to viewing Betfair data files, does anyone know of any way of getting around the fact that Excel (2003, at least) has a maximum of about 67,000 rows?
The data is organised alphanumerically by sport ID, which makes it a bit difficult to access greyhound data when the first 66,000+ entries relate to football!
I've tried using OpenOffice Calc - it started trying to open the document 10 minutes ago, and it's still chugging away, but I'm not holding my breath!

Max rows
PS I found a solution - you can use Microsoft Access.

Note that when you try to do a pivot table, you get a 'more than the maximum of 64,000 dimension number of children for a single parent' message, making it as useful as a chocolate fireguard for my purposes!
Looks like I might need to get Excel 2007, which apparently has a million rows...

Upgrade Excel to a more recent version to get more rows: -

Not used access for 3 – 4 years. If I remember correctly you can filter/sort data quite simply. Don’t know how betfair data is presented but can’t you segregate greyhounds form horse races for a start, then sort out horse race by distance or course or date (range of dates).
If not do a google search for sites like this http://www.teacherclick.com/access2003

Thanks Tony
There's a Sports ID column (http://data.betfair.com/sportids.htm) I could use for that purpose.
I had a play earlier, but I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Access, so I didn't know where to start!
I might just see if I can pick up a cheap copy of a recent version of Office somewhere...
