I''ll leave you with a trading thought, as we know the real money doesn't lie ;)

If this virus is so deadly and truly is going to decimate the older half of the population, then why aren't life insurance companies going bankrupt?
Because if you have an insurance product and are already "old" the liability will be fully reserved.

Assurance companies constantly review their mortality assumptions and for most people these days the charges come directly off their funds, i.e. there is no gtee on mortality charges. For older products where there is a mortality gtee the life company in general will just make less profit than expected (it is small beer compared to charges / expenses)...
But this virus is apparently so deadly it's going to kill hundreds of thousands of excess people of all ages right? Normal UK total deaths is 500-600k per year so assuming this is so deadly it must be on trajectory to kill 1 million right?
Wrong. It may kill 1-2 hundred thousand. You probably think when a plane crashes it doesn't matter, only 100 people died but that's not the way most people think.

My understanding of a life insurance company is that they assume people will live to a reasonably old age with some sort of margin (+invest the premiums to grow the company over time), if thousands of people start dying 10-30 years earlier than normal I would assume they would go bankrupt.

So how can life insurance companies which rely on people living longer be so unaffected by the potential of hundreds of thousands of excess deaths? Has everyone happily been paying 200% premiums this year? I doubt a company operating on a reasonable margin could deal with that kind of excess payout. No one is putting their money where there mouth is and shorting them in the stock market anyway
It's quite possible your understanding is wrong and your assumption is wrong. I've already asked you if you know what percentage of their capital is invested in LA. You didn't answer but obviously you don't have a clue. I would assume LA companies aren't stupid enough to overlook the effect of a widespread disease and put all rheir eggs in one basket.

Congrats to him, not many make it past age 100

No disrespect to him but unfortunately I already see a darker side to this. Mainstream media has already taken advantage of this character/emotional journey as coronavirus propaganda by shouting about it being the headline reason he has passed on and making sure everyone knows that he didn't take the vaccine
What mainstream news are you watching? I've just watched Sky News and they said absolutely nothing about Tom dying of covid. My understanding is he caught pneumonia first. The reason they told everyone rhat he didn't take a vaccine is obviously because everybody was asking. Do you expect them to just ignore the question, like you do?

Sad news for sure. Hope they give him a "state like" funeral.
I think something along those lines will be done.

It's sad when anyone dies but at least he's lived a long life, retained an amazingly sharp mind right up to the end, got knighted and knocked a holiday in Jamaica off the bucket list, before kicking the bucket. ;)

I reckon a minute applause for him would be more fitting than a minutes silence.

Your understanding is completely wrong.

Most "old" people don't have life insurance. Why would they, they don't have any big risks to cover. And its mostly the older people that die.

The cost associated with excess deaths could impact profits in that a bigger provision may be made to company reserves. But this is bread & butter for life assurance providers. They can also mitigate the extra risk through increased charges (which will be relatively small) and/or through reinsurance (and the reinsurers themselves will reassure to spread the risk if they are worried about risk level).

Also by the same token they will make money on annuities if older people die earlier. In fact some of the big beneficiaries are those companies that have been buying up annuity books over that last 10 yrs, e.g. Phoenix Grp.

An urgent inquiry is needed to understand why deaths from alcohol hit record levels in England and Wales in the first nine months of 2020, experts have said.
