Who supports racing directly?

The sport of kings.

i.e. other than paying Betfair commission and charges?

I'd like to think that those who earn their living from the sport put something back in. I went to Goodwood on Saturday for a birthday party (I suggested a day at the races) and had a fantastic day (and 3 chunky winners!).

If I had the cash I'd love to be an owner.

I've been an owner and it is great when the going is great. There are few things better than the thrill of watching your runner(s) first past the post. Owning however is not a place for the fickle. It's a great buzz, dont get me wrong, but if you are in it to make money, think again. The odds of breaking even are probably better on lotto. Grab some friends, form a syndicate and find a trainer you can trust. Get involved in the whole process, including months of pre-dawn trials and trackwork to race-day. It's a great past time and a good way to meet new people.

When I first started on Betfair I knew nothing about horses, but now I quite enjoy the spectacle. So I'll often drag the family along to a meeting on a Sunday or something. I also have a lot of respect for jump jockey's who take a lot of person risk in pursuit of the sport, so I'll often donate to the injured jockey fund.

I do think that racing could do a lot more to introduce other people to the sport.

Yeah lots could be done to attract more people to racing - although I think attendances are quite healthy atm especially considering pressures on disposable incomes.

I wrote the following to the racing post re their website:

"It's unfortunate that you charge to watch video replays of races. For more casual racegoers and punters (who are never going to pay to watch video on the internet), it's a shame. It would be great to be able to email a link to friends saying "this is the race that I got the winner in" etc., and would do its bit to promote racing to a wider audience. Would it not be possible to allow us to watch/download a few videos per day for free, or have a short advert before each video clip to fund the service?"

They replied saying that they don't own the rights so can't do it and that ads are annoying.

It would be quite possible to have a subscription service without ads and a free service with ads - it just requires a bit of effort.

A few of the group on Saturday had never been racing before and had a great day.
