Morning,
Due to go away soon and part of the hol will be spent in a casino...
Now, although I put millions through Betfair each year, i still dont consider myself a gambler, so I am struggling with the idea that I will be just throwing money away without some form of strategy...
i was talking to my friend last night about limiting ourselves to a set amount each day and which games we would play..
I've read a good book called "Taking Chances" which looks at the probabilities (Decent Book), that suggests that Blackjack is a good game to play (even a 1.35% advantage, depending upon how good you memory is!)..i would even be prepared to lose it all if I had a slight chance of a big win too!
So if anyone has had any success, or tips, greatly appreciated!
regards
Peter
PS Watched the Louie Theroux documentary on Vegas, a bit of an eye opener! In fact all his documentaries are really good, great journalist..
Casino Strategies
This guy is very good and I have had dialogue with him in the past.

When at Ladbrokes, I became quite good friends with a punter who had a Roulette strategy. He was eventually banned from every casino in Southampton, and I lost contact when he moved on.
He memorised the wheel, so he knew the exact position of every number. He would then wait until a new croupier joined the table. Croupier's are supposed to vary the speed of spinning the wheel and vary the speed of throwing the ball in, but it became apparant that many don't, they just get into a routine like we all do.
After 10 spins he knew if this Croupier was a good one to target. He would watch what number was in line with the ball at entry, and could then predict the range of 5 numbers where the ball would end up.
I went to Tiberius in Southampton with him and he was unbelievably successful, no wonder they all eventually banned him

Interesting thanks LeTiss
Just done a bit of digging around on the web and that strategy was the basis of a book The Eudaemonic Pie...(Suggests that it is possible to gain up to a whopping 44% edge??
Also mentioned here :-

Right up my street this; For some strange reason (maybe I'm slightly towards the plus side on the autistic scale!), but I have a great memory for numbers, but if the missus asks me to get a loaf of bread on the way home - forget it! Can never remember that!

Last time i was in a casino i did a bit of reverse martingale on the roulette just for a laugh
,
I know it's doomed to fail long term, but i did come out on top on the day
.
thats the way i treat casinos, just for fun, i save the serious stuff for on here, when i at least have a chance to win something.
Not saying it carn't be done,
there are some very clever people about, card counting ect, but thats way to hard for me

Word of warning though. Movie put my wife to sleep - something to do with numbers and maths making her eyes roll back in her head !

I'm not sure you still have a theoretical edge against the house if you play blackjack perfectly - I seem to remember hearing that the rules had changed.
But even if you do have an edge, I question to what degree you'll be able to exploit it. As soon as the casino realises you know what you're doing, you'll be shown the door. And with such a small edge, that could happen before you're in profit.
If I were going to Vegas, and were good at a game of skill, I'd take on fellow punters. But I wouldn't take on the casinos - as Betfair know, no matter how skillful you are, the house always wins!

If you are just going to a casino for a while I would have to suggest simply taking a set amount you are willing to lose and then playing some of the higher variance games. Games like blackjack will slowly whittle away your money [short of counting - but with current rules/your skills I doubt there is an edge].
Unsurprisingly a paperback will not provide you with the promised money on the cover however this provides a decent primer on the strategies to theoretically make money at casinos [albeit authors naturally avoid what can still work]. Sklansky is well regarded and worth reading elsewhere including the original 'theory of poker'

Without turning this into a 'gambling movies' thread rounders is a grittier '21' albeit about poker.

Thanks All,
Realistically we dont expect to win. I'm sure that many Phd students have sat for hours trying to work something out...so no point looking there! I'll approach it much differently that I do my trading for instance. Its just a bit of fun and we will have a set amount to play with each day.
Right now, I tend to favour the roulette 'strategy'. Why? Well,if you think about it logically, if I get it wrong completely, then the bank has a very slight edge on the zeros(so no different than joe public),but it I get it even partially right then that will give me slight edge...limited downside, potential upside perhaps??

With some online casino sites, you get free money to play with. The only downside is that you need to turnover x times the free money in order to withdraw it. A good, low risk way of achieving that is through roulette.
