How are certain football stats recorded?

Hi

I was wondering how stats are calculated/recorded for football matches whereby you can have for example, the player's distance covered? Do they have a GPS chip in their boots or something? And, haven't they been recording these details for a while now, perhaps before this technology was widely available? For stats like amount of passes completed etc, I could see how you could have poeple manually taking notes to tally them up, but surely better ways have been developed. Would be interested if anyone could point me to some useful links, have tried searching google to no avail.
