Personally I think Greta will come good. Like a fine wine!

Climate Change 🔥☄️🌋🌪
The interesting thing for me is the vocabulary used and the way arguments are framed. When I was a boy, we were very clearly taught that another 'ice age' was imminent. Twenty years later it morphed into 'global warming'.
A further twenty years pass and now we cover all bases by calling it 'climate change'.
I've noticed this vocabulary-related pattern with every other major discourse of the modern age. From 'gay' to 'science' to 'phobia', all you have to do is change words' meaning and their points of reference, and then you win your argument by default. Or at least you think you do, and that's all that matters.

i think in fairness re *global warming*, it's since been noted that there are a variety of changes in local and global weather systems and *climate change* really is a better description as that encompasses floods, drought, severe snow storms, ice cap meltoff, glacier reduction, increased forest fires etc...weemac wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 2:19 pmThe interesting thing for me is the vocabulary used and the way arguments are framed. I've had 'The Age of Stupid' on my drive for a decade I think, but sadly never got around to actually watch it. Same with Zeitgeist 2.
You really have to be in a very specific mood to watch these types of illusion-shattering docs.
She's brilliant, that iconic speech still gives me chills : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVlRomp ... eTelegraphRealrocknrolla wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 10:00 amPersonally I think Greta will come good. Like a fine wine!

...due to the position of the Solar System when travelling around the super-massive black hole at the centre of the Galaxy, the climate on Earth naturally changes as the gravity whilst travelling around the Milky Way changes in it's various parts.
Nuclear fusion is the Holy Grail in energy production.jimibt wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 9:02 ami don't think it's nuclear power per-se that she's objecting to, its the fact that we are still some way off from having a near zero halflife (or rather, dealing with the fact that the halflife can be thousands of years) on the depleted U235 (U238 is the *safe*(er) byproduct). however, investment in R&D will definitely speed up this quest. it's one of those techs where you have to look at the complete lifecycle, rather than just the emissions from the creation of the energy from the source.Aarondewit wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 4:28 amIf she really is of the thought that climate change is so dire, why does she oppose nuclear energy? I don't believe that is a compatible view. Maybe it's all an act of self-indulgence.
But thats circa 2040 at best.
Is there any point, on that timescale, to go building more fission reactors? They take yonks to design and build.
I suspect this is why we're pushing renewables, even new oil fields (Cambo).
It's a variegated approach until we get to energy Nirvana.

But may I propose a revolutionary idea, on how to battle corruption/greed and save the planet blah blah etc : anyone over 18 is automatically disqualified from being a world leader. Let the kids run the show, they're much smarter anyway than their wrinkly counterparts, we need to go full Peter Pan here to stand a chance. The folly of man is far too immense to do just about anything else. Am I serious? Who knows
