I have not traded from Tenerife but I have traded from Mallorca Menorca and mainland Spain. They have pretty decent internet in most areas, I am sure some areas will be crap. I did use a VPS on most occasions and it was fine.
I once attracted a crowd in the lobby of a hotel in Malaga as everyone watched the crazy Englishman clicking away at his laptop!
I was getting 10mbps on he shared hotel wif-fi with excellent response times.
I think there is a site that allows you to check internet worldwide, I will trawl through my links and see if I can find it.

Just did some checking and apparently the standard speed in Tenerife is 6 Mbps. They performed a big upgrade to the ADSL service in November 2007.
It seems that Telefonica are the main providers and Wanadoo have a bad name!

Last summer I did some trading from Gran Canaria and everything went smoothly.
I've traded from Gran Canaria with no problems, connection was pretty good. I don't know what Tenerife is like but personally I wouldn't want to spend too long in Gran Canaria, the tourist industry has totally raped the place of any charm it may once have had (some parts make Margate or Blackpool look like Venice) and have made the locals extremely unfriendly towards foreigners (which is unusual for the spanish.) Other islands might be different and that might not bother you anyway but personally I'd do a quick trip out there to check out the place before committing to a few months there.
On second thoughts it probably still is far better than Britain in the winter!

I stayed at Playa de Amadores and everyone was very nice and in Puerto Rico too. Talking spanish is an advantage
You are right about the tourism industry though. It's massive!

I do speak spanish. I just found the place completely different to everywhere else I've been in Spain. In fact it didnt really feel like Spain at all (except for Puerto Morgan.) Maybe I'm being a bit snobby here lol but you've seen that monstrocity of an open shopping centre cutting right through the centre of Puerto Rico - If Mcdonalds did town planning....
Other people have said how unfriendly the islanders are too, but have said they're more friendly on the other islands. The beaches are nice though

Its possible to get all the sky channels over there, there are plenty of bars with sky after all, but you would need a pretty enormous dish to pick them up in that part of the world. I guess you could use a slingbox if you've got sky in the UK, but that would incurr an extra delay (maybe a second or so?) and might slow down your betangel refresh rates (though maybe by not too much?)
