I take a different view on that fact, Australia is a pretty big place. Imagine a town half the size of Australia.
What's the definition of a 'major urban area' ? And what's the area of all the minor urban areas?
I agree with Derek, that sounds like a shockingly large area. iro 3.6% of the total habitable surface of the Earth! And with each person requiring approx 1.2 acres of land to sustain them you can see easily why we've already far exceeded the Earth's carrying capactity.
