Always found it curious that the americans are so zealous about the morality of gambling and yet the internet is stuffed full for porn which has originated and is sold from the US.

I can understand the American position - gambling generally wastes people's money and in some cases ruins lives.
So you could make a case for banning it for the same reason that you ban hard drugs. But there's also something to be said for the idea that doing so merely criminalises people who aren't harming anyone, and plays into the hands of the black market...
It's odd that you can legally walk down the street carrying an AK47 in the States, yet placing an online bet could land you in jail...

Yep ! I was in Dallas during superbowl playoffs years ago and I still remember going to a bar to watch the game and the sign at reception - ' Please Leave Firearms With Attendant Prior To Entry ' . Still blows me away !

Looking at the gambling question, in the USA you cannot even play bingo (not that I would want to) as all forms of gambling are ban except in a few states. However, no one lives that far from a bingo hall or casino. As most Indian reservations run these entertainments as they are not bound by state law.
While I was in the States my partner used to attend Bingo as least once a week and we often travel a few more miles up the road to the casino for a night out. Where I played blackjack and she played the bingo slots. I was in Tacoma, Washington, so I can’t speak for other states. Every bar I went in sold scratch cards, these sold by the 100s. When people started buying them the barman would put a dustbin behind the bar for them to put the losing ones in. So there was gambling in one form or other every where. To play bingo you had to join the club or tribe so any winnings could be logged so you could declare the winning on your tax return. When playing the lottery you had to state when buy your ticket if you wanted 50% of the winnings upfront or all of it over 20 years. These winnings are also taxed.
USA politics is very much run by the strong Christian right out there so they would like to see every thing banned. You would have think they would have learnt there lesson from the 30s when alcohol was banned. It caused more trouble than when it was legal. Now in the days of the internet when you can operate world wide I think they are going to realize it can’t be stopped. They will come round to the way the UK did in the 60s when they legalize gambling here. They new it was going on every where (my mum told me she used to take her dads bets to the butchers) so by legalizing it, it could by regulated and more import for the government TAX it. In the next few years I think the same will be discussed about drugs.
