Australian Open 2022
Wow, super interesting if this is true. Djokovic submitted visa application in November
If that is true, it is pre-allegedly contracting covid in December. That may (emphasis may) be significant in the proceedings, make a mistake on a visa form (ie saying you qualify for an exemption when at the point the form was completed that was false) and you risk deportation.

I read somewhere if that's the case he faces a 3 year ban from the country too!gazuty wrote: ↑Sun Jan 09, 2022 11:32 pmWow, super interesting if this is true. Djokovic wins legal case, judge quashes decision to revoke visa.
However, Federal Government flags (doesn't say it will necessarily go it, but may) revoke Djokovic visa under a different power (and remove Djokovic from Austalia and prevent him re-entry for three years).
A lot of water still to flow under the bridge.

I've got mixed views on Djokovic.
Nobody should be forced to have the vaccine, but that's within the boundaries of one's own country.
However, to refuse to have the vaccine and then expect another country to open their borders for you, smacks of arrogance really
If he plays, it's terrible preparation.
The stress and the lack of practice must be wreaking havoc with his chances of winning.
Throw the obvious booing into the mix, and I'll be amazed if he wins the tournament

I agree with this. If I were an Australian who has sacrificed so much for so long I'd book tickets to watch him, just so I could give him stick. It's so disrespectful.LeTiss wrote: ↑Mon Jan 10, 2022 9:05 amI've got mixed views on Djokovic.

only 30min to go before he's in the clear - this is exciting !
I think it was thought out from the Djokovic end. I think it was the Australian Border Force and the Federal Government that was caught out (I think they got a shock when Djokovic tweeted he was on the way) and then they scrambled and stuff up when he arrived.
To me (and this is unfortunate for tennis lovers and those without strong opinions) there wil be very vocal reactions, probably during play and during the ball toss for serves. There will be severe disruption. In addition, of all the States, Victoria has suffered the most throughout Covid in Australia, with the longest and harshest of the lock downs. The local Premier has imposed vaccine mandates for certain jobs and some people as a result have lost their jobs. While Australians are generally very compliant, the vaccine mandates are more contraversial (90%+ of the population getting vaccinated does not necessarily mean widespread support for vaccine mandates).
And yet, here we have someone about to perform their job in the most public of circumstances possibly before a world wide television audience as a confirmed unvaccinated person. That does not play well with the general public. Not everyone will make noise and not everyone will boo and Djokovic of course has a loyal fan base, but of those that will make noise my guess is around 80/20 against Djokovic.
I just don't know if he will be able to get through a match.
The overall way this has been handled by Tennis Australia, the Victorian Government and the Federal Government does not bode well for the AO keeping its grand slam status. I can see the ATP being really upset with all of this.
Updating this - apparently the four hours was only if he was to be kept in detention.sionascaig wrote: ↑Mon Jan 10, 2022 9:50 amonly 30min to go before he's in the clear - this is exciting !
My understanding is the Minister can still cancel his Visa tomorrow (or an any other day) for any of the reasons available to the Minister in the Migration Act.
So, even though he is not in detention, there remains the possiblity that the Minister revokes his visa, returns him to detention and deports him.
