Russia was promised non-expansion to the east - Russia was betrayed, Russia asked to include it in nato (there was nato base once on Russia's territory!) - Russia was refused.

Are betrayal and rejection signs of love for you?
All true but that's not a justification for an invasion.
A knife at the throat is a good reason to kick bully in his balls and Ukraine is a nato's balls.
And this knife is not just a knife, it's a swiss knife with all possible options starting from artificially raised right radicals in power (two countries block worldwide condemnation of nazism - usa and ukraine, what a coincidence) and ending with banned by the geneva convention wmd development.
You probably don't see the pictures we get in the west but women, children, even a woman in labour are getting blown to pieces. Cruise missiles and artillery shells are being fired into blocks of flats and other residential areas. There can be no justification for that.

If that was reason enough to invade your neighbour China and India would be at war, South Korea would have invaded the North, and most of Africa would be in flames.

By that logic we would all be living inside Sid Meier's Civilisation.

We kinda are. Doomsday devices do not allow to pull the trigger completely.

I totally agree with greenmark, that everyone had to sit down at the negotiating table and solve problems peacefully. But that did not happen and now we have all this madness unfolding.

And russians not the only ones who should ask authorities why do it is all happening, why couldn't this be resolved peacefully. Maybe if people in the west had held back their military hotheads this and many more other tragedies would not have happened.

Neither Russia or Nato are squeaky clean.
But having just depressed myself reading the (long) Wiki page on Russi-NATO relationship it would appear its been breaking down steadily for quite a while. All the hope and co-operation has stopped. They don't talk anymore. And instead have embarked on a new arms race and Cold War posturing.
Ukraine would appear to be the tragic victim in the squabble.
I just can't see Putin backing down so its just going to rumble on.
We can only hope that Ukraine/Russia talks are succeeful.

Don't be depressed, greenmark. There is a slight chance that we all (peasants) are watching a huge theatrical performance while being pickpocketed (gas still being transported to europe through the war zone and these strange american "U" schemes to allow their companies buy resources through third countries. And don't forget about gigantic financial markets infested by instagram and tictok kindergarten investors from whom it is so easy to steal a lollipop). So there is a chance that it's still all about the good old money and we will not end up with a nuclear winter. That keeps me optimistic.

Seems to me gas is the key indicator here. Not oil, we can get that elsewhere. But if Russia turns the gas off, both parties suffer. We lose a vital energy source. Russia loses a vital revenue stream. But worse still it breaks yet another strand of co-operation.
I shall try my best not to be depressed though and try to match your optimism. :-)

I've often wondered what NATO/OTAN means. Trust the French to spell it backwards.

Azov is a far-right all-volunteer infantry military unit whose members – estimated at 900 – are ultra-nationalists and accused of harbouring neo-Nazi and white supremacist ideology.

The US is sending the folllowing:

2,000 Javelin Missiles
800 Stinger Missiles
100 Tactical Drones (Game changing)

The UK is sending the following:

4,000 NLAW Missiles
1,000 Silverstreak II Missiles (Game changing)

If i were Russia then I would withdraw their remaining 16 Generals from Ukraine, they aleady lost 1/5th of them. :o

Its being reported that the Russians are using analogue radios and the Ukraine forces are listening in using Ham Radios which allows them to target high ranking officers.

I'm impressed that you don't feel 1600 nuclear warheads are relevent.
Our best hope is this remains a conventional war where after a bit everyone gets fed up and realises it was all a really flipping bad idea. And talks.
