Very fatalistic outlook on the thread today! I'll try to put a more optimistic spin on things...

Putin isn't getting any younger and he doesn't look very well to me so hopefully he goes the same way as Uncle Joe and suffers a stroke in the middle of the night (or he gets bumped off by one of his inner circle, depending on which version of history you believe). in the confusion and power vacuum in the immediate aftermath of his death Ukraine, Sweden and Finland join NATO. Going forward the US and other western powers interfere in Russia's elections and ensure that an ex drag queen gets elected president. President Katya Chlamydiovich-Jockitch announces the anniversary of Putin's death as a national holiday where once a year Ukrainians are invited to throw rotten fruit at his embalmed corpse. Also, in a bid to prevent history from repeating itself a new school curriculum is introduced called Critical Lunatic Theory that all children aged 4-12 must learn. Any parents who dissent risk being exiled to Belarus which is now a vast prison state overrun by sex offenders, conspiracy theorists and Ant & Dec impersonators.

So what do you suggest to besieged Russia - surrender? Sweden and Finland gonna join nato in may - another threat, another step to escalation. You should ask your leaders why are they keep doing it, keep escalation growing. But as you say it maybe too late to ask or protest...

Putin's not besieged, he's invaded Ukraine so it's only natural surrounding states will want to join NATO.

Of course, Derek, nato is about free ice cream for its members and absolutely not about icbm deployment on their territory with fire button in Washington.

Also, why so personalized? Putin will leave sooner or later, but nato will stay.

Russia is an aggressor whereas NATO is a defender of peace, it's not the same. Of course Putin won't see it that way but he sees (and talks) through his arse.

Yes, Russia is the aggressor (this time) ... the same as the USA were the aggressor in the Cuba crisis (JFK issued threats if Russia did not withdraw their missiles). As I said at the start of my post, I do not condone their action. I am just drawing a similarity between NATO being on Russia's borders and Cuba/Russia being on the USA's borders.

Nato hasn't asked Finland and Sweden to join, they have/are requesting it. Its upto each country to decide what they wish todo, not Russia. Nobody can win a Nuclear war, it will just be the end. So, no more Betfair.

Agreed but the USA didn't see it for Cuba to decide what Cuba does! All I'm saying is Putin is seeing the USA/NATO actions as being the same as JFK saw Cuba's/Russia's actions. Do you think Betfair will have a book on nuclear war or not?!!

Putin's not besieged, he's invaded Ukraine so it's only natural surrounding states will want to join NATO.

Some of those nearby states were looking to join NATO before he invaded Ukraine ... he is reacting to seeing NATO creeping up on him.
