I thought that too.
We've been training Ukrainians for yonks but Putin is quite capable of spinning the story to suit himself.
However, the whole point of NATO is an alliance that adds up to something greater than the sum of its parts. Defence for over 800 million people vs aggression from a population of 145 million.
Even if you factor in Russia's massive nuclear weapon arsenal, Russia attacking any NATO country would be an existential threat to Russia and I don't think Putin is as mad as that.
The whole basis of his rule is to run an oligarchy. So he and his chums can live high on the hog. Nuclear conflagration would obliterate that.
