When backpacking, I had a job in Cairns, tropical Queensland, which included drying oil barrels full of sand for sandblasting, by shovelling each one bit by bit down a 15 foot rolling furnace, sited at the edge of a beet field, in 40c heat. Was 1989 and I was on $10 an hour. Not even a sign of anything protective - I was totally expendable lol

Worst thing was I was right next to a river I couldn't go near, as it was full of crocs :)
Other than that, it was completely safe
Well, apart from the time they dropped me over the side of the ship they were sandblasting, in the Cairns estuary, in a bosuns chair. Armed with a massive angle grinder to grind off the paint for the welders. 40 foot drop into croc infested water lol. Still no PPE or safety harness of any sort. It was either go or they'd find another willing backpacker.

Kids don't know they are born these days ;)

Annoying thing was, the girls in our hostel all got jobs washing cars in bikinis, making loads of tips on top of their wages.

Rusty ship captains are notoriously bad tippers.

Holme Hall (or Ashgate depending who you ask). Nicest place I've lived. Perhaps not lively enough for some, but it suits me. And the people are nice, down to earth folks. Compared to Brum it's heaven.
It's heading for 26C today. Not ideal for me but manageable. The breeze swings round from west to south overnight and we're looking at 32, 35, 37 through to Tuesday night.
I'm impressed by the temperature tales from everyone. But for me The Silk Run has it right. I am a snowflake when it comes to hot weather.

Just got a text from Severn Trent asking people to put away sprinklers and hoses as they are seeing a large increase in water usage. This comes days after them texting me asking the very same.
So some people don't recieve these texts or don't care and carry on regardless.

I've only had a garden for three years and don't think there's been a hose-pipe ban in that time. I would respect it if one was imposed so I'll chuck a few hundred gallons down tonight. :D

At least they have a 25mph breeze and water via the team cars.
But yeah, brutal.

The peloton seems to reflect that - go have fun, you breakaway loonies we'll just cruise.

I may be wrong but I believe wind mainly cools you down when it's cooler than your skin temperature (aside from evaporating sweat), so it's not a wind-chill but a wind-warming temperature - it's basically hot air being blown at you.

I've heard from research scientists (from down under) that fans are useless when the air is very dry because you sweat less in those conditions and they shouldn't be used when the temperature is over 35ºC. :)

Get something made of cotton, soak it in ice cold water and then wrap it around your neck.

There are 2 large archeries at the back and front of your neck. Keep them cold and it will cool your entire body.

Stay safe. 🤠
