RIP also.. she took it on in extraordinary circumstances, at such a young age and gave it her all.

hmm - just wondering [half seriously] if this thread should be LOCKED between 22:00 and 06:00 am. got a feeling the lager will start talking later if we're not careful!!

I fully respect the queen as a person, have admiration for how well-measured she was, avoiding giving opinions and controversy, and I feel for her close family as I would when anyone passes. I just take the view that she wasn't elected or appointed for the role so Republicans like me, without meaning to be disrespectful, won't recognise it as a valid or meaningful role. Even Boris Johnson if he died as PM (if only...) could justify more fanfare. I was hoping to see what Truss had to say on the news but there's no chance of that now. It's almost like having a bank holiday when the pope dies when only half the nation is catholic.

I'm not a fan of monarchies and all but no doubt the Queen was an icon and played her role as expertly as one could. I'm not British but definitely feel for the UK these days; seems like there's been a lot of blows and it's been a real low point. Let's hope her passing could at least mark a rebirth or reawakening.

Its almost impossible to imagine what its like to be born into the position of head of state - the expectations to be met, the limitations / restrictions on what she can do, the hands she's had to shake. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Don't think there could have been many - if any - that could have done it better.

Very well said.

And on her last day she dispenses her duty to usher in a new PM.

Let's get things in perspective. Her "duty" was to shake hands and verbally give Truss permission to form a government. Truss had to travel 400 miles to make it easy for her. As I said, I have respect for her and understand why she's so highly regarded. But if you're going to scrape the bottom of the barrel in praising her it doesn't really do her any service.

Bottom line Derek is just to let those that want to pay respect, do so.

It doesn't cost much to be respectful and it's easy to do that even if your not the same as somebody else. It's one of the things that makes us human.

That's so sweet, and poignant, and hope represents the offshore community on this platform.

One of horse racings last remaining friends with any power and influence. Arguably the sports greatest ambassador.

I always thought horse racing would die with The Queen, and at a time when racing needs all the friends it can get, she will be very dearly missed. I imagine a lot of the foreign investment in the sport was done because of its links with The Queen, and the chance to rub shoulders with her in the paddock at Royal Ascot etc. Cant see any of the other royals being such strong supporters of the sport she loved.

She was a class act, and a true racing fan.

Yeah, sure a lot of people will be very sad.

Will racing be back on Saturday?

In hindsight, perhaps we should have this thread for people to pay respects and another to discuss the trading consequences.

I'm not even British and I'm slightly ticked off by the lack of respect and just common decency really
