I didn't know the queen served in the army as a mechanic.
Yep, did her bit in the war. Would have been so easy for a Royal princess to hide away during the war (plenty of rich people did) but she got her hands dirty (as did millions). It’s a small example of winning respect through one’s actions in spite of one’s status (not because of one’s status).
If I was her dad I would have forbidden it. Working in the kitchen would have been one's place. ;)

She did that also throughout her life too

Margaret Thatcher once recited how during her first visit to Balmoral she was shocked to find the Queen washing the pots, and didn't quite know what to say or do when she was passed some gloves and towel and asked if she wanted to help

On Kuenssberg this morning 3 ex-Pm's all waxed lyrical about being treated to a BBQ with Prince Philip cooking and Liz setting places and clearing plates. She was normal, born into staggering privilege. But over the years (decades) I concluded that, at a human leveI, we would benefit from a few more like her.

There was a great story from one of her security lads on Sky News yesterday or the day before.

They were out walking around Balmoral and met a couple of Americans and started chatting to them, she said she was living in London but had been coming to Balmoral for about 80 years. 80 years or so? You must have met the Queen here?? She said No I haven't met her, but Dickie here has. Dickie said she's nice, but can be very cantakerous at times. Americans put their arms around Dickie for a photo and handed the Queen their camera to take a picture. Then Dickie took their camera and took a picture of them with the Queen. They went away oblivious that they had met the Queen. Dickie said he'd love to be a fly on the wall when they were showing their holiday pics to their friends and someone recognised the Queen

Dunno how much truth there is in it but it was a nice anecdote anyway.

I remember a story Sir Mark Prescott said on the old Channel 4 Morning Line. The queen visited his stables, there was a pileup on the gallops that morning, and when Prescott took the queen to meet the stable lads they were all swearing their heads off at each other arguing over whose fault the pileup was. They went silent and looked embarrassed when they realised the queen was in the room, but she just said, "It's alright, I'm used to that sort of language, I've been married to a sailor for 40 years". :)

Looks like a complete shutdown for food on Monday until 5pm and then only in local stores.
So Thurs/Fri/Sat are going to be manic.
Not complaining just observing.

Just watching all this pageantry today.

How do they practice for all this? Or is this just a repeat of prior well laid out plans from centries before.

It's quite fascinating watching it.

It has been precisely planned and we have been shown various practice sessions taking place in the darkness in the last few days.

Spent many hours practicing and many hours on the drill square. When Princess Diana died we practiced for around 3-4 days. If you listen to the drill sergeant while marching it’s pretty simple.

Drill with weapons looks so slick and I was proud to take part. All eyes are on you.

A tough word to spell. I suppose they had a reasonable stab at it?

Luckily for them, the queue's got longer so it's now London Bridge.

Second attempt just now. Better effort but still no cigar...
