Something interesting I heard today, the Conservative leadership rules allowing members to vote were drafted in 1998 after the Labour landslide. They were never intended to select a new prime minister.
Asking 'the people' to vote on an important decision sounds all nice and democratic. The trouble is 'the people' are invariably uninformed or idiots... and often both.
Agree. MPs are the ones who have to actually work with the PM. If they left it to MPs, Sunak would be PM and the economic catastrophe would never have happened. The downside is that with Sunak the Sensible in office, politics will be pretty boring. I doubt he'll do anything stupid that we can all ridicule. :(

It's really hard to believe that we've had two consecutive PMs that have been utter laughingstocks. :D

Sunak should at least be able to steady the ship for a while. He seems to be competent enough to understand economics, and he is not as thick as mince like Truss.
He will of course have to make tough decisions, cut spending and raise taxes, so he will be unpopular.
That leaves the door open for a Johnson messianic return for next election....

I think Johnson is done now, there will be no return, Sunak will lead them into a GE.

Johnson will lose his seat at the next GE. His support base is crumbling and the time he next gets into parliament, it will be non existent

We don’t want it going to a ballot. They will pick Penny. Somebody shoot her quick.
She's 30 on the exchange if you want a bit of her. :)

She's reached 90. What would the betting be if she gets 100 and the vote goes to the members?

Suggestion that Mordaunt may pull out to avoid the same scenario again, regarding members going against the MPs' choice.

Her camp say she's reached 90. The BBC say 30. I know who I'd trust.
But if she hits 100 and it goes to the members I'd be aghast if she doesn't win.
And it would end in disaster.
I honestly believe the Tory membership are so dim and stubborn they are incapable of making a sensible decision.

Looks like the heavyweights are now behind Rishi. IDS andGearge Osborne the latest to suggest Mordaunt should pull out and negotiate for the cabinet role she wants. Is common sense breaking out in the Tory Party (sorry shouldn't use that word :-))?

I think you're comparing public to private support.

Beth Rigby says Mordaunt won't be pulling out, it will go to the wire if she gets her hundred.

double edged sword. if PM became PM, then i'm certain a general election would occur next year -so good news for all. however, in the interim, the legwork undertaken by liz truss would be further exacerbated and the country would be all the poorer for it.

anyway - once again, hats off to all the 2016 crew that got us where we are now -happy brexit!!
