Read the sad news, late last night, that Terry Hall has died at 63 after a short illness.

You probably have to be of a certain age to really appreciate The Specials, but growing up in the late 70's and early 80's, Two Tone music was everywhere. The Specials were the best of a great bunch, Political, multi racial and with a great sound

I saw them live 4 times, the last 2 years ago, and used to lie awake at night , at 14, with a cassette player under my pillow, listening to their first album.
A very sad day when someone who wrote the soundtrack to your youth passes away

R.I.P Terry, you will be greatly missed :(

This was my coming of age music. My sister was a bit older than me so I got pulled into the punk, 2-tone ska scene at the end of the 70's.

Hadn't really expected this.

I know. So unexpected. I only say them relatively recently. Didn't think I would be reading that last night 😔

They weren't one of my favourite groups but a defining sound of my teenage years. He carried on with Fun Boy Three and The Colourfield. I didn't realise he was so young, he must have been about 20 in The Specials.

63. I don't know if I'm shocked he died so young or more shocked we're all so old.

Enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink

I liked two-tone. The Specials were genuine, Madness were a bit playing it for laughs. Selector came 2nd for me with The Beat next.
If you read about his traumatic childhood you wonder how he ever rose to fame. Or maybe that was what drove him

Very sad all the same. Hope isn't going to turn out like 2016. A year that started with Bowie and Wogan going and ended with Ray Parfitt and Gerge Michael.

I loved that 2-Tone movement of late70s early 80s, one of the super coolest trends in music. The Specials, The Beat, Fun Boy Three, I'll even throw in Bad Manners. Terry was a top creative talent. One of his much later tracks that I have loved was Sense.

PEAK Terry Hall imo

I believe this was recorded in my town of Newcastle for The Tube way back, with a nonchalant June Miles-Kingston on the sticks. RIP Terry!

I went on a day trip to France when I was 12 years old. Makes you realise it could happen to anyone.

I've just had a rummage and found a 7" on 2-Tone with Gansters by "The Special AKA" on one side and The Selector by The Selector on the other. That must have been an early one. And I'd forgotten The Beat were on Go Feet not 2-Tone (I've got Hands off she's mine, the label says 1980.)

It was fairly common for indy labels to put a different band on each side back then. That's when pressing vinyl cost more than clicking upload.

The last 7-inch single I ever purchased was Murray Head's One Night In Bangkok in 1985, for 99 pence. That's £3.55 in today's money!

Does anyone remember looking for scratchings on the runout? When you bought something back then it really got a good coat of looking at. :)

I never had a Porky (collectable now) but engineers often did some sort of mark when they cut the master to press from...
