I need to ask a question and as I'm a newbie to the forum I'm not sure if I'm in the right place. I've been laying pre race today in practice mode and greening out for a profit in running. I was reasonably successful in practice mode but I'm not sure whether there's some reason real trading would be entirely different. I know that it's different when you're putting real money at risk, but all I need to know is whether the results I'm seeing on screen are lulling me into a false sense of security!!
It depends. One thing if you bet on a liquid runner with small spread and few hundreds of unmatched money on both sides and other thing if you try to be the first in a queue on a illiquid runner with a huge spread.

I nearly always lay one of the first three in the market so plenty of liquidity.

The UK has had a long tradition, going back to when I was a teenager, of giving bookie staff a few days off a year just before Christmas. In those days racing was just six days a week. Now that we've got Sunday racing and even racing on Good Friday; let them have a break. They'll be open anyway for their bingo, casino and FOBTs. ;)

When they stopped the racing on 23rd Dec and replaced it with racing on Good Friday about 7-8 years ago I wasn't a fan at first but now prefer the three day break we now get over Christmas

When are the powers that be going to cop on and sort out the racing fixtures. Its such a sort sighted view and as anyone who studied economics knows, more supply will eventually lead to demand drying up

I'm sure in the late 80s there were as many (or more) than 16 meetings on Boxing Day. Imagine trying to trade through that.

a day for being really patient, timing it right or not doing anything at all, but then again that’s every day isn’t it?

I tend to just target to the top 2-3 meetings on Boxing days, but even then I'm only nipping in and out between other stuff, If I trade 4-5 races it'll be a busy day for me
