Storing horse name to reuse it later?

I'm probably missing something obvious here.

I want to back the first selection that meets my conditions, which is easy enough, use place back bet, applied to any selection, conditions in the conditions tab. But how do I store this selection so I can do further things to it later on? Eg I want to place a second back bet if it drops 20 ticks?

You wouldn't need to store the name to do that

You can just use either of these on your back bet rule;
Number of place bet triggers condition is greater than 0
Number of matched bets triggers condition is greater than 0
