The rise of betdaq

Mate I'm fairly positive about this just tried another bet and it got matched on the exchange. Try placing a 2pound bet yousrself and you'll see. Also it looks like they are sending horse races in-play through there "bookmaking" service. No bookmaker in the right mind would do this unless they were just acting as an exchange.
It doesn't matter exactly what betfair SP is, the point is that it was an alternative betting medium introduced by an exchange which could have had the effect of taking business away from the main exchange, and it didn't.Ethanol wrote:If I'm not mistaken, Betfair's SP betting is still against other punters. They have some algorithm in place which works out the SP odds based on the amount of SP money on the back and lay sides of each selection.hgodden wrote:Don't forget what it was like before betfair introduced the betfair SP, there was worries that it would destroy the exchange and it certainly didn't.
Looks to me like 1bet is just for incredibly lazy or stupid people. Who wants to back at 4.5 when they could have had 4.8? They may as well stay with Ladbrokes.
They will almost definitely be laying of on the exchange yes.
but i disagree that it's nothing to worry about,
it's a slippery slope and unfortunatly it looks like Betdaq will go the way of Betfair rather than staying as true exchange, wich is not good news for any of us really i would not have though, disapointing
.
We need an exchange thats knows it's an exchange and stays that way imo.

It just looks to me like Betfair have pre-announced they are going to have a book so Betdaq have responded, quickly. That's all it looks like to me.
On a more +ve note I have made more on Betdaq today than on Betfair and that is before changes so that's a significant outperformance.

Yeah that would make sense considering they don't seem to be offering the chance to lay with 1betjimrobo wrote:I read somewhere that its an extension of their already available bookmaking product they have and can be sold seperately to external customers and fed into the main exchange so if anything it could be a positive rather than a negative

Not sure I would see it as a positive, clearly they are trying to get in ahead of Betfair but is that the direction people want to see the exchange model going.
I say it shows more about their attitude and what it means for the core exchange.
It would highlight the fact that the exchange model is unable to attract the traditional bookmaker punter and thus both Betfair and Betdaq are having to go down this route rather than trying to make the exchange itself easier to use and understand for these people.
I see it as a failing of the exchange model basically.
Also have they offered any assurances that they will always feed the money into the exchange as opposed to in 2 or 3 years time run a bookmaker facility themselves as that produces much higher returns than feeding the money into the exchange.
As has been said by people it is a slippery slope.
I would have much preferred to see them launching a better exchange, with improved API calls and put money in to promoting the actual exchange as opposed to this.
I can't see them providing any assurances that the money will always filter into the exchange and it will be all of the money and not just some.

I think that was more to do with people not understanding how the SP would work as opposed to it taking money out of the exchange.hgodden wrote:Don't forget what it was like before betfair introduced the betfair SP, there was worries that it would destroy the exchange and it certainly didn't.
If it's a level playing field then it's not so bad.
But i really don't think that Betdaq will be putting offers up on the exchange and waiting to get matched like the rest of us.
They will just cherry pick off what they need before anyone else has the chance and that carn't be good for anyone.

Now though won't they have to be putting their very limited resources into promoting this service taking much needed money away from the exchange budget and can no longer set themselves apart from Betfair as being a pure exchange. Something people have been crying out for.
In terms of brand name they have a much weaker one than Betfair and much reduced resources so you would assume that Betfair would get the lions share of the market this type of betting medium would be targeted at.
All in all as I have said I see little positives to come out of the move.

Good point, opens up the whole front running argument, beating the delay argument. matching money before it is visable etc etc.freddy wrote:If it's a level playing field then it's not so bad.

Raises far too many questions and doubt for my liking.
Why couldn't people just stick to being an exchange and taking the commission.
