It's deeper than that ... ... A good example of how not to do the balance sheet!greenmark wrote: ↑Tue Sep 05, 2023 2:30 pm£87m on a budget of £3.2billion hardly seems ground for bankruptcy. But I know nothing really.Derek27 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 05, 2023 1:52 pmI've just heard that on the news. Has it ever happened to a council before and what exactly does mean to the people living in Birmingham?firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Tue Sep 05, 2023 1:45 pmLabour controlled Birmingham CC take bankruptcy action ... think before you vote!![]()

I watched a rerun of Yes Minister & Yes Prime Minister last year, still found it funny.firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 4:10 pmhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMvBLJlqTpw ... could still be true now!Derek27 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 6:09 pmGillian Keegan apologises for saying when she thought the cameras were off: Does anyone ever say you've done a flipping good job?

Mind you, rather that than the one billion splaffed by Boris on vanity projects whilst major of london: garden bridge, orbit tower, routemaster buses, cycle scheme etc, etc...firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 4:19 pm
... A good example of how not to do the balance sheet!
PS: not sure you can classify an equal pay claim as a "vanity" project!
And wouldn't want to forget the enormous economic damage to the whole country done by boris & truss following brexit.
And in the interest of balance we have:
Northamptonshire County Council
The first authority to declare bankruptcy in the two decades following Hackney, the Conservative-run Northamptonshire County Council was forced to issue a section 114 notice after years of financial mismanagement that resulted in debts of close to £1 billion. Note: this did not include an equal pay claim, it was just incompetence.
Thurrock Council
According to a blistering government-commissioned review, Tory-led Thurrock Council gambled hundreds of millions of pounds on risky commercial investments, while attempting to silence critics. Forced to grapple with a £500 million deficit in late 2022, Thurrock was the fourth council to issue a section 114 notice following Northamptonshire County Council. Note: this did not include an equal pay claim, it was just incompetence.
Woking Council
Recently taken over by the Liberal Democrats in May’s by-election, Woking Council declared its effective bankruptcy following a series of risky investments in hotels and skyscrapers under the previous Conservative administration. The Surrey-based local authority issued a section 114 notice in response to “unpredicted financial challenges” after it revealed it faced a deficit of £1.2 billion. Note: this did not include an equal pay claim, it was just incompetence.

Again you may be right ... I didn't say it was a vanity project but I thought Labour were 'super-equality' oriented so how come they stiffed the girls?sionascaig wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 5:16 pmPS: not sure you can classify an equal pay claim as a "vanity" project!
I knew Brexit would be blamed in here somewhere ... the causer of all ills.sionascaig wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 5:16 pmAnd wouldn't want to forget the enormous economic damage to the whole country done by boris & truss following brexit.
And I'm pleased that the three councils you quoted on all paid their girls equal wages ... something BCC didn't do.

A but they didn't - like most councils irrespective of who ran them - the problem with Birmingham was that they discovered, after an IT upgrade, the initial payment was too low and had to up it with no reserves to cover...firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 9:35 pm

Actually, there was a really interesting piece - think it was BBC - on shambles of Glasgow council (labour) attempts to minimise payments by doing a deal with the relevant unions where you had to apply via the union to make a claim and all details of the claim calculations were not disclosed as part of the T&C's of applying. There was an accusation that the unions were taking a cut on any settlement.
They (labour) also spent millions fighting the claim in court over 9 years... Final bill c£700m, funded vial loans and selling assets...

OK but I remain a 'Thomas' when it comes to believing the unions would not be pushing all CC's for equality pay!sionascaig wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 6:18 amA but they didn't - like most councils irrespective of who ran them - the problem with Birmingham was that they discovered, after an IT upgrade, the initial payment was too low and had to up it with no reserves to cover...

Indeed. Especially if they can get a cut of c7% of any settlement. Absolutely shameful and one reason I will never vote for labour whilst in the pocket of the unions.firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:52 am

7% of £700m is quite a tidy sum...

I heard it's "10 Years to Save the West", but I'm not sure if they were joking.
